Learn how electronic gadgets are designed, developed, and built as embedded systems that shape the world.
This is part two of a two part sequence. In this class, we will use interrupts to design a range of real-time systems including an audio player, a data acquisition system, a control system, and an interactive game. This is a hands-on, learn-by-doing course that shows you how to build solutions to real-world problems using embedded systems. These courses use a bottom-up approach to problem solving, building gradually from simple interfacing of switches and LEDs to complex concepts like display drivers, digital to analog conversion, generation of sound, analog to digital conversion, motor control, graphics, interrupts, and communication. We will present both general principles and practical tips for building circuits and programming the microcontroller in the C programming language. You will develop debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and software instrumentation. Laboratory assignments are first performed in simulation, and then you will build and debug your system on the real microcontroller. At the conclusion of this course you will possess the knowledge to build your own arcade-style game from the ground up.
This is the fourth time we have offered this course. Since the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive we do not plan major changes over the previous offerings of the course. We did however break the large class into two smaller classes. There are eight labs in part 1 and six labs in this class. Students can pick and choose a subset of labs to achieve certification. The three labs that students found most rewarding were the hand-held video game, generating sound using a digital to analog convertor, and creating a smart object using Wifi communication.
To complete this course, you will be required to purchase a Texas Instruments TM4C123 microcontroller kit and a few electronic components. This microcontroller has a state-of-the-art ARM Cortex-M4 processor.

ConfX is a MOOC for a conference on MOOCs. It gives voice to several researchers who build sense from MOOCs. Each of them will explore a particular question from their own perspective: faculty members, instructors, instructional designers, researchers, and others. They will share their experience and research results based papers they will present at the EMOOCs 2015 Conference.

Emotions are the backbone of social activities as well as they drive the cognitive processes of several living entities. This course tries to elucidate the controversial nature of emotions and their evolutionary meaning. Several animals, including humans, have emotions but…what about machines? This is a course to feel and think about.
This course is an investigation of the Roman empire of Augustus, the Frankish empire of Charlemagne, and the English empire in the age of the Hundred Years War. Students examine different types of evidence, read across a variety of disciplines, and develop skills to identify continuities and changes in ancient and medieval societies. Each term this course is different, looking at different materials from a variety of domains to explore ancient and mideveal studies. This version is a capture of the course as it was taught in 2012, and does not reflect how it is taught currently.
In this course you will learn how to conduct research using empirical methods, which rely on observation and experimentation. This course is appropriate for those interested in using empirical research methods in their field, particularly students in the social and behavioral sciences. Topics include the formulation of the question to be investigated and the of resulting hypotheses, the collection of data and the analysis of the data collected, and the interpretation and study of analysis results. We assume that learners entering Empirical Research Methods (ERM) have taken at least a semester or year-long course in statistics and, through this or some other experience, have been exposed to the following concepts: Random Variables Population and Samples Data Tables (rows=sample units and columns=variables) Summary Statistics: Mean, Median, Variance, Covariance, Correlation Graphs: Boxplots, Barcharts, Histograms, Scatterplots Inference: standard errors, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, etc. Models: Bivariate Regression, perhaps ANOVA If learners have not had such exposure, they can follow the appropriate links into the OLI introductory statistics course to review the required concepts.

No prior knowledge is required.
After completing the MOOC, you will be familiar with many crucial employability skills in particular in the German context. Thus, you will be more prepared when applying for jobs and able to turn a job opportunity into career success in Germany.
Course Structure
Chapter 1 - Introduction. In the first chapter, you will meet the instructors, gain an overview of the course. You will also learn what employability means and how higher education develops it. After the first week, we will also offer a free webinar about getting your career started as a foreign graduate in Germany.
Chapter 2 - Career identity. Your career identity means the understanding of self on the labour market. This is determined by various factors such as your competences, motivations and values. In this chapter, you will learn how understanding and reflecting such factors can form a coherent career identity and help you toward greater self-confidence.
Chapter 3 - Job application skills. This chapter will give you an overview of the German job market and a variety of skills in identifying job opportunities, writing your application documents and carrying out an effective job application process. You will also gain free CV and cover letter templates in English and German.
Chapter 4 - Workplace Analysis. Daily work within an organisation is different in every country. The contents of this chapter guide you in analysing the structures and interpersonal aspects of your workplace in order to make integration easier and improve your performance early on.
Chapter 5 - Psychology of Employability. Employability is often linked to the psychology of self. How well you tackle workplace challenges and develop professionally significantly depends on your attitudes, efficacy beliefs and self-confidence. This chapter will discuss the meaning of these concepts to your personal employability.
Chapter 6 - Career development project. The course also involves a career development project assignment. If you sign up for the certificate track, completing the assignment is a passing criterion; otherwise completing it is voluntary but useful. Chapter 6 will focus on supporting the project by providing advice and answering learner questions.
Chapter 7 - Evaluation and goodbye. Our course is now over and it is time to look back at how we did. At this point, your feedback would be very much appreciated and helpful in improving the course. The certificate track students will receive a personal review appointment by one of the team members at this point.
