This course is designed to allow participants to engage in the exploration of the grammatical structure of a language that is unknown to them (and typically to the instructors as well). In some ways it simulates traditional field methods research. In terms of format, we work in both group and individual meetings with the consultant. Each student identifies some grammatical construction (e.g. wh questions, agreement, palatalization, interrogative intonation) to focus their research: they elicit and share data and write a report on the material gathered that is to be turned in at the end of the term. Ideally, we can put together a volume of grammatical sketches.

The first three to four weeks of the term, our group meetings will explore the basic phonology, morphology and surface syntax for a first pass overview of the language, looking for interesting areas to be explored in more detail later. During this period individual sessions can review material from the general session as well as explore new areas. At roughly the fifth meeting, individual students (typically two to three per session) guide the group elicitations to explore their research topic.

This five-week, instructor-led, open online course is targeted to learners who would like to develop better skills in grant writing to serve organizational funding needs. The course is targeted primarily to volunteers and staff members of non-profit organizations, whether they are involved at the community, provincial/state level, or national level. This includes individuals who may find themselves in positions where they are making or considering making grant applications but have little or no training or experience. In these days of limited resources, more organizations are looking for grants to assist them in creating or expanding new programs to meet increased needs and demands. Successful grant writing is becoming a skill requirement for both professional and volunteer leaders. The course will provide learners with the skills and tools to identify potential grant sources and walk them through the steps to successful completion of the grant application process. Real-life examples and applications in the course will provide learners with practical experience. The instructor will provide basic theory and tips to strengthen confidence and skills in successful grant writing. Students will have the opportunity to complete an application for a selected program or initiative. Upon successful completion of all course tasks, the School of Health and Human Performance at Dalhousie University in Canada will issue you a certificate of course completion.

Teaching is one of the most underfunded professional fields in the United States. Teachers often spend their own money to provide basic supplies for their classrooms. In order to bring in new technology or try new approaches in the classroom teachers often have to write grants to obtain external funding to achieve their teaching goals. In this course, we will focus on learning about the different kinds of grants available, the grant writing process and common mistakes that may hamper your success. We will work as a learning community to support each other to prepare a crowdsourcing and a traditional grant application that can be submitted to a funding agency. The overall goal of this course is to help you feel informed and empowered to seek funding for your classroom today!

Graphene is the world’s first 2-dimensional material and is the thinnest, strongest, and most flexible material known to exist. Graphene, a special form of carbon,,can conduct electricity and heat better than anything else. In this electronics course, we will introduce you to the exciting world of graphene science and technology. You will learn about the fundamentals of graphene and how this material offers new insights into nanotechnology and quantum physics. You will also learn about emerging practical applications for graphene. Topics covered include material properties, electronics, physics, physical chemistry, synthesis and device fabrication and application.

Graphene offers a wealth of potential future applications; in composites, solar cells, sensors, superchargers, etc. The list is endless. This course takes a closer look at the particular potential graphene offers within electronics, e.g. optoelectronic devices using graphene produced via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), an industrially compatible technique.

This course content was developed at Chalmers University of Technology who is the coordinator of the Graphene Flagship, EUs biggest research initiative ever. At the Chalmers Graphene Centre research and industry cooperate in the field to achieve interplay and synergies.

Beginning in antiquity—with Euclid's algorithm and other ancient examples of computational thinking—the course will progress rapidly through propositional logic, Turing machines and computability, finite automata, Gödel's theorems, efficient algorithms and reducibility, NP-completeness, the P versus NP problem, decision trees and other concrete computational models, the power of randomness, cryptography and one-way functions, computational theories of learning, interactive proofs, and quantum computing and the physical limits of computation. Class participation is essential, as the class will include discussion and debate about the implications of many of these ideas.

The purpose of this seminar is to examine systematically, and comparatively, great and middle power military interventions into civil wars during the 1990's. These civil wars were high on the policy agenda of western states during the 1990's. Yet, these interventions were usually not motivated by obvious classical vital interests. Given the extraordinary security enjoyed by the great and middle powers of the west in the Cold War's aftermath, these activities are puzzling.

This course examines systematically, and comparatively, great and middle power military interventions, and candidate military interventions, into civil wars from the 1990s to the present. These civil wars did not easily fit into the traditional category of vital interest. These interventions may therefore tell us something about broad trends in international politics including the nature of unipolarity, the erosion of sovereignty, the security implications of globalization, and the nature of modern western military power.

Despite spectacular recent progress, there is still a lot we don't know about our universe. We don't know why the Big Bang happened. We don't know what most of the universe is made of. We don't know whether there is life in space. We don't know how planets form, how black holes get so big, or where the first stars have gone. This course will take you through nine of the greatest unsolved problems of modern astrophysics. We can't promise you the answers, but we will explain what we do and don't know, and give you an up-to-date understanding of current research. This course is designed for people who would like to get a deeper understanding of these mysteries than that offered by popular science articles and shows. 

This is the first of four ANUx courses which together make up the Australian National University's first year astrophysics program.
