Did you know your best opportunities for growth may not lie solely in developing new “blockbuster” products or services? They may instead be found by focusing on your existing best customers — and finding new customers with similar behavioral tendencies. Created by Professor Peter Fader, a world-renowned thought leader on marketing analytics and co-founder of Zodiac, a predictive analytics solution built on the breakthrough consumer behavior models developed by Professor Fader, this marketing course is designed to help you identify your most valuable customers and maximize their strategic value.

You might have the data and the technology to track your best customers, but how can you meaningfully differentiate them from the rest? How do you align your operations around them? And how do you create and sustain competitive advantages from such practices? In this course, you’ll radically rethink how you develop and implement customer-centric strategies that you can apply to your existing customers today. You’ll also gain valuable insights into how to apply performance metrics and rethink product development processes in order to meet the needs of your most valuable customers.

One session will be linked to colleagues at Cambridge University in England where a parallel course is being offered.

Managerial issues addressed are associated with managing changes and innovations occurring in the nature of work and organizations and the role of the corporation in society. Topics covered include the changing social contract at work, integrating work and family, managing diversity, managing strategic labor-management partnerships, and managing relations between the firm and its multiple stakeholders. Subject is open to distance learning as well as on-campus students and to industry participants.

Planet Earth is known as the blue planet due to the large amount of water present on its surface. However, less than one percent of total water is available to humans as usable freshwater. With increasing population growth and the effects of climate change hundreds of millions of people around the world, in both developed and developing nations, are facing an uncertain future in terms of the water resources that will be available to them for use. This free online course looks at aspects of water resources and their management, and how this can affect human health. The course begins with a review of water and its various uses, and it then looks in detail at the water cycle that supplies vital freshwater for use by humans, how water is treated for human consumption and how clean freshwater is vital for human health. The course then looks at water resource and water supply management, and how pollution can cause water stress. This course will be of great interest to professionals working in health, international development or environmental organisations who want to learn more about water resources and their management or to students who would like to learn more about how managing water resources may affect their lives.

To make sense of modern China, you simply cannot ignore Marxism. ‘From Mao to Now’ presents current topics that anyone who wishes to engage with China should know.

Rather than praising or condemning, the course focuses on building a deeper understanding of this history through two interwoven elements.

The first structures the course in terms of some ‘red tourism’ to the sites important to the communist revolution in the first half of the twentieth century.

Much of the course footage was filmed on location in China, including Shaoshan, Ruijin, Yan’an and important locations in Beijing, such as Tiananmen and the Nationalities Museum (minzuyuan).

The second element of the course will take those experiences and use them to help answer some fundamental questions:

  • Is China socialist or capitalist today, or is it perhaps both at one and the same time?
  • Is there such a thing as Chinese socialist democracy, and, if so, what is it?
  • Does China have its own theory of human rights, drawn from the long Chinese tradition and Marxism?
  • If the Chinese state is a form that has not been seen before, then what is it?

This seminar focuses on the cognitive science of moral reasoning. Philosophers debate how we decide which moral actions are permissible. Is it permissible to take one human life in order to save others? We have powerful and surprisingly rich and subtle intuitions to such questions.

In this class, you will learn how intuitions can be studied using formal analytical paradigms and behavioral experiments. Thursday evening, meet to learn about recent advances in theories of moral reasoning. Overnight, formulate a hypothesis about the structure of moral reasoning and design a questionnaire-based experiment to test this. Friday, present and select 1-2 proposals and collect data; we will then reconvene to analyze and discuss results and implications for the structure of the moral mind.

This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.
