Introductions and Pretest Chapter 1 - Introduction to Specifications (Randy) Chapter 2 - Professionalism (Randy) Chapter
Identity theft is an increasingly common crime. The term 'identity theft' refers to criminals obtaining information about you or your customers that can then be used to make purchases or enter into contracts in your name or in your customers' names. Identity theft can result in direct financial loss, damage to credit ratings, difficulty getting loans and credit cards, and months of reorganising financial accounts. Identity theft isn't only carried out through computers and the Internet, other methods include retrieving unshredded documents from rubbish bins or bags and criminals contacting you directly and pretending to be from a legitimate organisation in order to obtain personal data. Fortunately there are many preventative measures you can take to substantially reduce the chance of your identity being stolen. This course will show you the steps you can take to minimize damage if you become a victim of this crime. This course will give you the tools to protect yourself and your staff by highlighting the issues around identity theft. This free course will be of great interest to all learners who would like to protect both themselves and their businesses from the damaging effects of identity theft.<br /><br />
This course covers amino acid sequence control of protein folding, misfolding, amyloid polymerization and aggregation. Readings and discussions address topics such as chaperone structure and function, folding and assembly of fibrous proteins, and pathologies associated with protein misfolding and aggregation in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and other protein deposition diseases. Students are required to write and present a research paper.
Proteins play a very important role in all organisms. In fact, most of the work that happens inside every cell happens because a specific protein is employed for a specific task. Often the three-dimensional shape of a protein plays a major role in its function. As such, it is important to know the structure of all proteins to have an idea of what function they perform.
One of the jobs of a bioinformatician is to predict the three-dimensional structure of a protein using only the DNA sequence that encodes it as well as determining the effects of any mutations in the DNA on the three-dimensional structure/function.
In this course, part of the Bioinformatics MicroMasters program, you will learn about protein structure and its impact on function, practice aligning protein sequences to discover differences, and generate model structures of proteins using web and software-based approaches.
Protein is found in virtually every part of your body. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.
In this biology course you will learn how proteins drive almost all living processes.
Proteins manufactured by cells perform a broad range of essential functions — the molecular workforce of living organisms.
You will learn how proteins are the cellular manifestation of genetic information. They are assembled into a polymeric structure from monomers derived in part from components in our diet. Proteins catalyze metabolic reactions, replicate DNA, respond to stimuli, provide movement, and much more. Using video lectures, articles, case studies, and molecular models, we will explore how proteins are constructed, how they fold into 3-dimensional shapes, the kinds of bonds that hold these folded structures together, and the immense range of roles that proteins assume ‑ from structural proteins found in muscle to catalysts for cellular chemical reactions.
Purification and characterization are essential to understand protein structure and function, and we will identify a variety of methods to uncover how these tiny machines drive almost all living processes.
For students and teams who have started a sustainable-development project in D-Lab (SP.776), Product Engineering Processes (2.009), or elsewhere, this class provides a setting to continue developing projects for field implementation. Topics covered include prototyping techniques, materials selection, design-for-manufacturing, field-testing, and project management. All classwork will directly relate to the students' projects, and the instructor will consult on the projects during weekly lab time. There are no exams. Teams are encouraged to enroll together.
Prototyping is a skill every designer should master because it's the most effective, fast and often cheapest way to make your ideas tangible and tested. In this course, you'll learn to think through and make your design a better experience for your users by sketching, experimenting, creating and testing.
In this six week course, you will be working on a prototype for a concept you’ll develop in the first weeks involving a mobile device. You will explore different types of prototyping, from paper prototypes to a digital prototype and eventually even a physical prototype.
In a world where we have to deal with new technologies on a daily basis, the prototyping process will help you understand the user and the way he or she interacts with these new and existing technologies. Understanding and executing this process will make your design stronger and more valuable to the end user.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course, you know how to incorporate prototyping interaction in your design process. This will not only make your design process more effective, it will also help you gain new insights about the user and the way he or she interacts with your product or service.
What do I need to know?
No prior knowledge is required, but some practical experience in UX design, interaction design and design principles is recommended since the course is covering prototyping for user experience for mobile devices but also physical prototyping. For this you might need a physical prototyping tool (e.g. a Makey Makey, an Arduino or a Touchboard) prior to, or during the course, if you want fully participate in the course exercises.

Imagine you wake up one morning and read a news flash on your smartphone or other mobile device that a major fire threatens your office building. You immediately remember that your organization recently practiced its quarterly disaster preparedness exercise. You know what to do, who to contact, and the location of the alternate office to use in case of an emergency. You are concerned, but you are confident that you have a plan in place. As a key member of the organization’s crisis communication team (CMT), you know your role. You help management immediately prepare a news release and update the company’s website with factual information on the who, what, when, and where details of the event. You use social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, and traditional media, such as radio and TV, to inform internal stakeholder groups (e.g., senior leadership, employees, and investors) and external stakeholder groups (e.g., customers, clients, local officials, and the general public) with appropriate key messages. In this course, we will look at the properties behind the basic concepts of probability and statistics and focus on applications of statistical knowledge. We will learn how statistics and probability work together. The subject of statistics involves the study of methods for collecting, summarizing, and interpreting data. Statistics formalizes the process of making decisionsand this course is designed to help you cultivate statistic literacy so that you can use this knowledge to make better decisions. Note that this course has applications in sciences, economics, computer science, finance, psychology, sociology, criminology, and many other fields. Every day, we read articles and reports in print or online. After finishing this course, you should be comfortable asking yourself whether the articles make sense. You will be able to extract information from the articles and display that information effectively. You will also be able to understand the basics of how to draw statistical conclusions.
This Research Methods course is part one of the two-part Research Methods series, which also includes the Research Methods Lab course. Research is the foundation on which any solid science is built. This course will introduce you to research methodologies frequently used in the social sciences and especially those used in the field of psychology. It is important that you are able to not only identify the techniques used by others but also employ them yourself. The course is designed to provide you with the foundation you will need to apply certain techniques in the search for your own answers. The course will begin with an overview of how research, and its appropriate methodology, came about in science and, more specifically, psychology. We will then go over the ABCs of conducting research, learning how to define “variables” and why they are important. While this course will also touch upon statistics and their importance, it will not require a comprehensive knowledge of the subject. The course will concl…
