The course is organized into three, two-week sections that combine design thinking content with real-world education examples, as well as opportunities for participants to apply concepts in their own setting:

1. Meet Design Thinking: overview of different approaches to design thinking, understanding the importance and exploring the potential for bringing design thinking into schools; hands-on design challenge to explore the process.
2. Design Thinking in the Classroom: real-world examples of how and why PK-12 classrooms use the design thinking process to enhance student learning; hands-on design challenge to experiment with the process in your own classroom or workplace.

In Introduction to Data Structures, you’ll learn the fundamentals of creating data structures, and gain exposure to coding and visualising data structures. You’ll explore the importance and impact of well organised data.

You’ll learn how to build a program from small pieces and understand why organisational approaches make such a difference to some very common approaches to solutions.

The course identifies the most important and useful data structures in use in modern programming and each will be presented with exercises for building, visualising, and manipulating that structure. Each exercise embeds a simple and intuitive application for the particular organisation of data that we present. Through the course you will be given a concrete understanding of data structures by writing your own programs to interact with the data structures.

You’ll get the most from this course if you have some understanding of simple programming, and the Foundation week of the course will allow you to test the level of knowledge you require. In this IMFx course you will learn, from hands-on demonstrations, how to price different types of bonds, how to calculate different measures of bond yields and how to compare them across different types of instruments. You will become familiar with the term structure of interest rates, a key ingredient in establishing benchmark rates used to price securities in the markets and a valuable tool for monetary policy design and diagnosis.

You’ll gain an understanding of the firm fundamentals that can explain why a stock price may go up or down, or why it might be higher for one company in comparison to another, you will be able to apply these fundamentals at the economy-wide level to analyze valuations of the stock market as a whole.

Finally, you will gain insight into investors’ decisions. You’ll explore the main criteria that an investor uses to determine how to construct the best possible portfolio of risky assets. In short, the FMAx course is designed to provide a common language in finance, thus allowing you to interpret and analyze financial data. Ever wondered what it would be like to live in the world of dinosaurs? Yes? Well here’s your chance!

Using the Late Cretaceous fossil site of Erlian, China as an example, we bring you to the Gobi desert, as well as leading international museums and institutions to find out how we reconstruct dinosaur ecosystems.

This biology and life science course will focus on the knowledge we can gain from studying animals and plants. You will learn about a dinosaur’s biology including their appearance, classification and diet. We will take a close look at the mostly meat eating theropod dinosaurs, as well as the main plant eating dinosaurs, the sauropodomorphs and ornithischians. At the end of the course, you will learn how palaeontologists use fossil and modern evidence to reconstruct dinosaurs and their ecosystems.

The course is brought to life with the help of award-winning palaeoartist Julius T. Csotonyi and is led by HKU’s vertebrate palaeontologist Dr Michael Pittman in collaboration with his esteemed colleague Professor Xu Xing of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Beijing. The world is full of uncertainty: accidents, storms, unruly financial markets, and noisy communications. The world is also full of data. Probabilistic modeling and the related field of statistical inference are the keys to analyzing data and making scientifically sound predictions.

This is Part 1 of a 2-part sequence on the basic tools of probabilistic modeling. Part 1 introduces the general framework of probability models, multiple discrete or continuous random variables, expectations, conditional distributions, and various powerful tools of general applicability. Part 2 will then continue into further topics that include laws of large numbers, the main tools of Bayesian inference methods, and an introduction to random processes (Poisson processes and Markov chains).

The contents of the two parts of the course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding MIT class, which has been offered and continuously refined over more than 50 years. It is a challenging class, but will enable you to apply the tools of probability theory to real-world applications or your research.

Probabilistic models use the language of mathematics. But instead of relying on the traditional "theorem - proof" format, we develop the material in an intuitive -- but still rigorous and mathematically precise -- manner. Furthermore, while the applications are multiple and evident, we emphasize the basic concepts and methodologies that are universally applicable.
