Biological systems are dynamic, complex, and made of many parts. In the past, scientists often tried to understand them by examining each constituent part. However, this approach was unsuccessful in many cases because the parts of any complex biological system can “interact” with each other and understanding such interaction is critical.

In this biology and life sciences course you will learn about systems biology, a holistic approach to understanding biological complexity, focusing on how all of the parts of a system work together. This course will teach you the basic concepts of systems biology, including engineering principles and tools developed for dynamic systems (e.g., robots) to better model and understand biological dynamics.

You will learn how simple math operations, addition and multiplication, can be used to model and simulate dynamic biological behaviors. Different types of “gene circuits” will be modeled and simulated using Octave Online, a web-based programming tool.

This course is geared towards secondary/ high school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educators and students. Basic programming skills will be taught in a step-wise manner so no prior programming experience or knowledge is necessary.

How can you engage with and reuse the wealth of digital cultural heritage available online in many repositories such as Europeana? How can you become an active user of this content, using, remixing and reinventing it for your research, lessons, and development?

Whether you are a student or teacher with an interest in cultural heritage, a GLAM professional, a developer or simply a cultural heritage enthusiast without prior technical knowledge, this MOOC is for you.

As the online availability of digital cultural heritage continues to grow, it becomes more and more important that users, from passive readers, learn to become active re-users. The mission of this course is to share the creative ways with which people use and re-use Europeana and digital cultural content, to demonstrate what Europeana can bring to the learning community, and to bring about the essential concept that cultural content is not just to contemplate, but to live and engage with.

The educational idea behind the E-Space MOOC is to lower barriers to the access and reuse of cultural heritage content on Europeana and similar sources, providing tutorials and trial versions of applications and tools alongside reading materials, useful tips and best practices gathered throughout the course of the project.

In every module (Photography, TV, Museums, Dance, Open and Hybrid Publishing, IPR…) the information provided is targeted – more or less explicitly – to different groups of learners:

  • Cultural heritage amateurs, students, and teachers. The information provided here concerns digital cultural heritage in a broad sense; different kinds of content are presented here and it is explained how to easily reuse them. No technical skills or understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the cultural sector are needed for this part.
  • GLAM professionals (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums). The information provided here presuppose a professional knowledge of the sector. The aim is to help GLAM professional discovering and understanding useful tools - such as those on the E-Space platform and Europeana Labs - that can be used to enhance, remix, rethink, play with collections in new and fascinating ways.
  • Developers. This is the most technical part of each module and it is intended as a way for developers to discover the tools they can work with.

Digital cultural heritage is online and ready to be creatively reused by you. What are you waiting for? Click on enroll now and start learning!

This MOOC is based on the Europeana Space project, which has received funding from the European Union's ICT Policy Support Programme as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme, under GA n° 621037 and aims to further the creative reuse of Europeana Content.

This course is an introduction to mechanics and follows a standard first-semester university physics course. You will learn fundamental mechanics concepts and mathematical problem solving required for all STEM fields.

The course begins with kinematics, where you will learn to use equations and graphs to describe the position, velocity, and acceleration of an object, and how those quantities are related through calculus. You will then learn how forces affect motion through Newton’s Laws, and how to understand and calculate several different forces, including gravitational, normal force, drag force, and friction force. The concept of energy will be covered, including kinetic energy, potential energy, and how they are affected by work. You will learn how to use the conservation of energy to solve motion problems. Finally, momentum, another “quantity of motion” will be described. You will learn how to calculate momentum, about its relationship to Newton’s laws, and how to use it to solve motion problems, including collisions.

This course is valuable preparation for the equivalent on-campus course, or as supplementary material.
