The origin of dogs is shrouded in mystery. In this course, you will learn how to interpret the often contradictory ideas about how, why, where and when dogs arose.
Geneticists, archaeologists, anthropologists and behavioral scientists offer a variety of often opposing ideas about how dogs—the first domesticated species—arose. Some place the origin of dogs over 100,000 years ago; others place the start of dogs just 12,000 years ago. Claims for the location of the origin of dogs range from China to Europe and many places in between. Diverse scholars have suggested dogs arose as trash scavengers or as hunters’ helpers.
This course will provide you with the tools you need to find your own way through the confusing claims about the origin of dogs.

This course focuses on conventional technologies for drinking water treatment. Unit processes, involved in the treatment chain, are discussed as well as the physical, chemical and biological processes involved. The emphasis is on the effect of treatment on water quality and the dimensions of the unit processes in the treatment chain. After the course one should be able to recognise the process units, describe their function, and make basic calculations for a preliminary design of a drinking water treatment plant.
The course consists of 4 modules:
- Introduction to drinking water treatment. In this module you learn to describe the important disciplines, schemes and evaluation criteria involved in the design phase.
- Water quality. In this module you learn to identify the drinking water quality parameters to be improved and explain what treatment train or scheme is needed.
- Groundwater treatment. In this module you learn to calculate the dimensions of the groundwater treatment processes and draw groundwater treatment schemes.
- Surface water treatment. In this module you learn to calculate the dimensions of the surface water treatment processes and draw surface water treatment schemes.
This course in combination with the courses "Introduction to Water and Climate" and "Introduction to the Treatment of Urban Sewage" forms the Water XSeries, by DelftX.

This introductory course has the same rigor as the regular M.I.T. course of the same name, which is one of the first subjects in M.I.T.'s Mechanical Engineering undergraduate curriculum.
In this course, students will learn to analyze and predict the dynamic behavior of objects and systems, their motions and associated forces, and understand mechanical systems of complexity that are representative of engineering practice. Students will also analyze the kinematics of mechanisms, understand torque and angular momentum in rigid bodies in rotation, and imbalance in rotating systems. Finally students will derive nonlinear equations of motion for a wide variety of mechanical systems, solve them using numerical methods in MATLAB as well as plot and interpret results.

This is an interactive course about the basic concepts of Systems, Control and their impact in all the human activities. First, the basic concepts of systems, dynamics, structure and control are introduced. Then, looking at many examples in Nature and human made devices, we will realize that the dynamic behavior of most systems can be modified by adding a control system. Later we will see how knowing how to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a system and measure its performance will provide the tools to design new controlled systems fulfilling some requirements.
By considering which are the benefits of control and the challenges for the future we will open the mind to tackle new applications and develop new scenarios from the micro-systems level to the common systems and the whole universe. An overview of the techniques available for a deeper introduction to the subject will be presented at the end.

Too often modern cities and suburbs are disorganized places where most new development makes daily life less pleasant, creates more traffic congestion, and contributes to climate change. This trend has to change; and our course is going to show you how.
Ecodesign means integrating planning, urban design and the conservation of natural systems to produce a sustainable built and natural environment. Ecodesign can be implemented through normal business practices and the kinds of capital programs and regulations already in use in most communities. We will show you how ecodesign has already been used for exceptional projects in many cities and suburbs—from Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm to False Creek North in Vancouver to Battery Park City in Manhattan, as well as many smaller-scale examples that can be adopted in any community. Cities and suburbs built according to ecodesign principles can and should become normal, instead of just a few special examples, transforming urban development into desirable, lower-carbon, compact and walkable communities and business centers.
As this course describes specific solutions to the vexing urban challenges we all face, course participants can see how these ideas might be applied in their own area. Participants will learn the conceptual framework of ecodesign, see many real, successful examples, and come to understand the tools, processes, and techniques for policy development and implementation.

What would happen if workers ran their own businesses? Would worker-managed firms make the same decisions as their capitalist counterparts? Could such an economy be efficient? What policies could be deployed to promote a cooperative sector?
This course will focus on these central questions as we discuss the internal impact of employee ownership; productivity, governance and management, as well as the external impact of employee ownership; spillovers for health, democracy, and the local economy.
We will also discuss the simple economic theory of the labour-managed firm. Cooperatives have many attractive features, including high productivity. But they account for a relatively small proportion of GDP in most economies. We analyse possible reasons for this apparent paradox. There is widespread interest around the world in cooperatives as an alternative to the capitalist corporation, particularly since the financial crash of 2008. Economics and other social sciences sharpen the debate on cooperatives. After taking this course, you will be better prepared to participate in public discussion on cooperatives, join a cooperative, or even start a new one.

La formación de los agentes educativos en los conceptos básicos en este campo busca trasformar las prácticas pedagógicas dentro y fuera de la escuela.
Múltiples y diversas manifestaciones muestran que se están produciendo unos profundos cambios en el mundo. El modelo de la sociedad industrial está dejando paso a un nuevo modelo de sociedad, aún difuso, en el que la capacidad de transformar la información en conocimiento es clave. Es fácil deducir que para esta nueva sociedad emergente se necesita un concepto de educación bien distinto al que requería la sociedad industrial. Sin este cambio educativo difícilmente se podrá conseguir satisfactoriamente el cambio y, consecuentemente, instalarse adecuadamente en un mundo que va a alterarse radicalmente.
El curso tiene dos objetivos. El primero es presentar el fenómeno de la transformación de la sociedad que estamos viviendo y los fundamentos para definir el mundo que está emergiendo como el de la sociedad del conocimiento. La pretensión de la primera parte es disponer de un escenario suficientemente detallado y sólido de lo que está sucediendo y superar así la visión e interpretación triviales que pueda haber sobre un nuevo modelo de sociedad. Sin esta buena base es difícil fundamentar el siguiente objetivo del curso: el papel de la educación.
El objetivo de tratar la educación en este curso es para presentarla en estrecha relación con una intensa crisis cultural que inevitablemente tiene que sobrevenir para que no aumente el desajuste entre el mundo tecnológico -planetario, desigual y contradictorio- que hemos levantado y los valores culturales de otros tiempos con los que queremos mirar e interpretar el mundo de hoy y el que se avecina. Así que se tratará la estrecha relación que hay y debe haber entre educación y cultura. De igual modo se verá en el curso la relación entre tecnología y educación, no desde el punto de vista instrumental, sino cultural.
La pretensión del curso es que de esta observación del fenómeno actual de cambio, y de la interpretación del papel de la educación para la orientación y control de ese cambio, surjan elementos inspiradores de acciones educativas precisas ajustadas a las múltiples realidades concretas desde las que se están sintiendo los desafíos de vivir en el siglo XXI.
El planteamiento didáctico del curso seguirá la estructura de un viaje por el tiempo, por lugares y también por conceptos que haga ameno el recorrido durante las siete semanas. En cuanto a la parte textual, habrá la experiencia de lectura de piezas multimedia concebidas y escritas para la lectura en pantalla, y especialmente en smartphones y tabletas.
