Why Islamic finance is important for the global financial industry
Islamic finance has grown rapidly, with the trend expecting to continue. Although the concept has been around for much longer, Islamic finance only attained a formal status in Muslim-majority countries in the 1970s. Today, it has become a global phenomenon, eliciting increasing interest around the world, including from non-Muslim countries like the United Kingdom, Luxemburg, Kenya, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Islamic finance has grown into a huge industry with total worldwide assets estimated at about US$2 trillion.
Islamic finance has the potential to contribute to higher and more inclusive economic growth by increasing access of banking services to underserved populations. In addition, it has the potential to promote financial stability due to its risk-sharing feature and its financing being asset-backed and thus fully collateralized. Moreover, Islamic banks offer profit-sharing and loss-bearing accounts that can help mitigate losses and contagion in the event of banking sector distress. These are all indications that Islamic finance is converging to the global finance industry and hence all international finance professionals should be aware of Islamic finance.
ISSCC Previews: Circuit and System Insights, is a class offered by the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). The course introduces several key circuit concepts and trends in a tutorial fashion, allowing participants to understand and appreciate the broad themes covered in the ISSCC conference.

Innovations in music rank among America’s most significant contributions to global culture, none more so than jazz. From its humble beginnings as dance hall entertainment, jazz is now embraced as an art form, respected and imitated the world over.
This music course addresses jazz from a listener’s perspective, but calls on professional jazz musicians to help us engage with this often mysterious aural experience. This six-week course will enable interaction with the basic components of jazz (swing, improvisation, structure and personal expression) while providing an inside connection to the artists who perform it.
Content includes excerpts from the 300+ video interviews gathered with jazz personalities for the Fillius Jazz Archive, select scholarly readings and demonstrations offered by the instructor, a working musician. Students will engage in user-friendly activities that include listening, responding, counting, and internalizing the concepts that make jazz work. Rarely heard stories and anecdotes offered by our interviewees will stimulate the imagination and provide rich content for open discussion.
We will celebrate the completion of the course with a live concert, streamed to participants of the course, who will also have an opportunity to interact with Monk.
Jazz: The Music, The Stories, The Players will appeal equally to the casual listener, the avid fan and the proficient jazz player.
The Bible says that Jesus was identified as God's beloved son at his baptism. The same identification was made about Israel in the Old Testament and the disciples of Christ at their baptism. The striking similarity of these titles establishes a tight interrelationship between the people Israel, the person of Jesus Christ, and the church.
In this course, we will explore how a close reading of the book of Genesis, the Gospels, and early Christian writers can shed further light on these relationships and, in so doing, deepen our understanding of the figure of Jesus Christ. Unlike many other treatments, this course does not presume that Jesus’ character can be plumbed solely by an examination of the Gospel stories. The witness of the Jewish scriptures and the lives of the saints are also important sources for this task.
The course will be eight weeks in length and organized around three topical questions:
Who is Israel? (primary source material: the book of Genesis)
Who is Jesus? (primary source material: the Gospels and the Creeds)
Who is the Church? (primary source material: a selection of post-Biblical Christian writers)

Amid striking polarization, the rise of fake news and the degraded state of the mainstream media, producing trustworthy journalism is more important than ever. Through this class, Journalism for Social Change (J4SC), you will learn the practice of solution based journalism, wherein stories give equal weight to problems and their solutions.
The goal of this online course is two-fold: 1) to teach you how to use journalism and media as an implement of social change; and 2) to have you become effective change agents yourselves.
Throughout the course, you will view examples of outstanding solution-based journalism. The majority of these stories focus on vulnerable children. The umbrella of children allows us to explore the broad, but deeply interwoven issues affecting all vulnerable peoples.
J4SC provide you with a platform to research, report on, and write about the policy and justice issues that fuel your own interests and passions, whether that involves immigration crises, criminal justice, women’s rights, child exploitation, or poverty. Student work will be published throughout the semester and have a direct, immediate impact.
Through precise, rigorous reporting and policy analysis, students will substantively contribute to public discourse, and by virtue of that contribution, drive political will toward positive policy solutions to the myriad social issues that vulnerable peoples across this globe face.
