Coursera: Learner Story: Paving a New Career Path
Edward Dixon’s enthusiasm for his software development job was waning - but when a recruiter suggested he explore the up-and-coming field of machine learning, he found Coursera’s Machine Learning course and was instantly hooked. Soon, he was applying his new skills to some of his company’s biggest challenges. His successes led to a new role and a newfound joy in his daily work. Here’s Edward’s story: As a run-of-the-mill software developer, I had great colleagues and a great working environment - but little passion for my work. A recruiter, listening sympathetically as I described my search for inspiration, suggested I look into machine learning. I searched online forums for a way to learn more about the field, and noticed that Coursera’s Machine Learning course was mentioned again and again. I signed up, and was wildly impressed—and hooked! As luck would have it, my employer had a problem at that time that I soon recognized as a text class…

Over the past few months, we’ve been collecting your feedback on courses you’re taking through a star rating system on your course dashboard. We’re very excited to announce that we now have enough data to begin displaying average course ratings on course enrollment pages. We will be testing a few different variations of the rating display in order to learn what information is most helpful to learners when browsing courses. In the coming weeks, when you view courses in the course catalog, you may see some new information such as an average rating, rating distribution, and written comments (note that in some cases, you won’t see any of this information during the testing period). Feel free to give us feedback on the ratings information by commenting on this post! We’ll select a final design in a few months, at which point you’ll be able to see rating information for all courses. In the future, we’ll also experiment with other ways to use rat…
