Udacity: Learn Differential Equations in Action
I remember starting engineering school and dreading the differential equations course I’d eventually have to take. Upperclassmen loved to taunt us with horror stories about professors talking a million miles a minute in math jargon and coursework so abstract and complicated that problems felt meaningless. This is not that course. Differential Equations in Action will teach you to create solutions to systems of differential equations using numerical approximation methods, which we’ll code in Python. The methods you’ll learn in this class are the same ones that physicists, engineers, biologists, economists, social scientists, and professionals in many other fields rely on every day in their work. We’re very excited to now begin offering Coaching support and Verified Certificates for Differential Equations in Action. With the paid course, your personal Coach will be available to help you set learning goals and work through any problems you may be stuck o…

Coursera: Imagine: If This Course Leads to Even One Person Escaping Victimization from Human Trafficking
Below is a blog entry written by Jacquelyn Meshelemiah, Associate Professor at the Ohio State University’s College of Social Work, about the new course Human Trafficking. The course starts on August 20th. No one wins when a modern world allows human trafficking to persist. Human trafficking is deplorable and rampant. Unfortunately, it is not well understood. Passive observers argue that the number of trafficking victims is “inflated” and “incalculable” due to its clandestine nature. My rebuttal is simply this: “Even ONE slave is too many!” Unrestrained, illegal, barbaric: human trafficking forces, frauds, coerces, exploits or induces children, women and even men into selling or relinquishing their skills, bodies or body parts. Trafficking dehumanizes and victimizes by making people into objects, currency, pleasurable gadgets or machines. In an effort to expose this violation of human rights, Ohio State University is proud to of…

Coursera: History began when humans invented gods, and will end when humans become gods...
Below is a blog entry written by The Hebrew University of Jersusalem’s Dr. Yuval Noah Harari about his course A Brief History of Humankind; started this week, August 10th. A human handprint made about 30,000 years ago, on the wall of the Chauvet Cave in southern France. Somebody tried to say “I was here!” A human footprint on the Moon, 1969. We were there too. Seventy thousand years ago, there were at least six different human species on earth. They were insignificant animals, whose ecological impact was no greater than that of jellyfish, zebras or chickens. Today, there is only one human species left: Us. Homo sapiens. But we rule this planet. The course, A Brief History of Humankind, takes us on a breath-taking ride through our entire human history, from its evolutionary roots to the age of…

We hear a lot about giving the learner something to do through interactivity and we hear a lot about engaging the learner. They are not the same thing. Interactivity does not necessarily create engagement, and engagement does not necessarily require overt interactivity. Learn about the difference here, and about the “Four T’s of Engagement.”…
Udacity: The Difference Between Programming and Software Engineering
“When I graduated from my programming bootcamp, I had the skills to be a great programmer,” Lindsey starts. “But it wasn’t until I joined Udacity that I realized I still had a lot to learn about being a software engineer.” The terms Programmer and Software Engineer, contrary to popular belief, are not interchangeable. A programmer knows how to code and may have the technical skills needed to build meaningful products. A software engineer follows a systematic process of understanding requirements, working with stakeholders and developing a solution that fulfills their needs. A programmer tends to work alone. A software engineer is part of a larger team. Lindsey realized this difference when she graduated from a prestigious bootcamp in San Francisco and started working at a company (with us!). From learning GitHub workflows to more involved testing (“I always questioned the importance of testing,” Lindsey explains, “with individual p…
