Coursera: The Age of Sustainable Development from Jeff Sachs, Columbia University

The Age of Sustainable Development from Jeff Sachs, Columbia University
2013-12-19 06:01:00

Jeffrey D. Sachs is Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University Special Advisor to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Jeff is teaching a course called The Age of Sustainable Development, below is a guest blogpost written by Jeff on the course. “For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all form of human poverty and all forms of human life,” John F. Kennedy observed a half-century ago, and his observation speaks to us today with special urgency. Our generation is truly the first that can end the ancient scourge of extreme poverty. Yet is also the one that can destroy the Earth’s life support system through human- induced environmental destruction. We have entered the Age of Sustainable Development. I am therefore enormously excited and pleased to be launching a free, global, online university course in this critical subject in January 2014. Sustainable Development is both a way of looking at the world, and a way of helping to save it. As…

Udacity: The Design of Everyday Things Online Course Launches

The Design of Everyday Things Online Course Launches
2013-12-18 01:08:00

What design tradeoffs do you see here? While making my usual cup of coffee this morning at Udacity, I noticed that someone recently attached a handmade label to our Nespresso coffee machine addressing confusion around a key step in using it.  The following questions immediately came to mind: How would I change the design to alleviate the confusion? What were the potential tradeoffs the people who designed the machine faced that resulted in the confusing step?  These questions prompted a smile because they’re evidence that I’ll forever see the designed world around me differently on account of my work on our course The Design of Everyday Things. Design is more than aesthetics, and is increasingly playing an impact in people’s lives (especially with the rise of mobile and wearable technology). When design is done well, it can play a substantial role in helping people live safer, healthier, more efficient, and even more meaningful lives. When it’…

Khan Academy: Hour of Code Day 1: Coding is Caring

Hour of Code Day 1: Coding is Caring
2013-12-10 20:12:51

Post from Pamela Fox, Khan Academy Computer Science Content Engineer Since I’m a woman in technology and that’s considered a rare find, I often get asked the question, “How did you start programming?” and I respond with this story: When I was a kid, I was a bit forgetful when it came to buying presents for holidays, and I woke up on Mother’s Day realizing that I had no present for my mum. We lived in the boonies, and the nearest store was a two-hour walk away, past a high-security prison. Well, I could have done the “draw a card, it’s the thought that counts” route, but I’d already done that in forgetful years past, so I needed a new “thought that counts” gift. I had just recently discovered the web, and thought “Hey! I’ll learn how to make a webpage!” After a few Yahoo! searches (Google didn’t exist then) and a download of the “Microsoft Internet Explorer Assistant Plug-in,” I had ma…

As an ode to more than 5.6 million Courserians around the world, we poured our hearts (and musical abilities) into this video of pop star Katy Perry’s new song, “Birthday.” The video was written, directed, edited, and produced by Coursera employees (with the help of some AMAZING Courserians who submitted their dancing videos from countries like Brazil, Spain, China, Bangladesh, UK and US)! The video offers a sneak peek behind the scenes here at Coursera. We have a new office space and our team of passionate individuals is devoted to having fun while supporting our mission - to change the world by helping to advance worldwide education. 2013 has been an incredible year for us at Coursera, and we wanted to share our thanks with you. It’s time to celebrate… a…
