DNA, the genetic code of life DNA is the organic software of almost all living things, and each individual cell is the hardware on which this genetic software is run. This amazing code, DNA, is the subject of one of Udacity’s newest courses launching this fall, Tales from the Genome: Adventures in DNA, Identity, and Health. This is an introductory course that will teach you basic genetic principles, regardless of your academic background. Together with the personal genetics service 23andMe, we will explore the biology of the most important code in your life: the human genome. Most Udacity fans already appreciate the beauty of code, and most of you are likely to be far more expert at understanding and manipulating computer code than I am! (Although I am pleased with my progress so far in CS101). Still, I am continually surprised by how unfamiliar people are with their own personal genetic code wrapped up inside every cell of their body. Long before transistors, binary code, or the…

Khan Academy: MCAT Training Camp: Final Reflections
From Khan Academy’s Rishi Desai, MD: The training camp ended, and I feel incredibly mixed. The only feeling of sadness comes from seeing folks head home after having gotten to know them quite well. But having 15 folks that are all focused exclusively on figuring out how to share the beauty of the biological, physical, and social sciences through videos is a truly unique experience. To have us all hanging out together in one hotel for a week is about as intimate and organic as it gets. We started out the week as strangers, and we emerged as brothers and sisters. Let me tell you about these siblings of mine… Though not biologically related, our family was knit together from seemingly every field of health and education… · One of my siblings flew back and forth from Senegal just to be a part of the week’s events. · Two of them had hospital experience, and…

We made it to the weekend! It was an…interesting…week for the staff here at Saylor.org HQ as we battled first a relentless D.C. heatwave and then a network implosion. Half of our air conditioning gave up on us, driving staff to our upstairs digs — imagine when the best place to be on a day with [...]…
Udacity: Sebastian Thrun: Improving our for-credit college path with SJSU Plus
Udacity has a simple vision: to make great college-level classes available to everyone (and anyone). And we know that to attain that vision we not only have to be great teachers, but also great students -- so with everything we do, we are committed to learning, improving, and then learning more. That’s why we decided, together with our partner San Jose State University, to pause the SJSU Plus program (the MOOC for college credit pathway we piloted this spring) and use the fall months to retool and optimize the experience for the students we most want to reach. While pass rates in the pilot were not as high as we would have liked, there is some context around the pilot and our next steps with SJSU that’s critical to understand: The student population in these classes was very different than what you’d see in traditional SJSU classes. Specifically, many of these students attended Title I high schools, weren’t current college students, or had previously requi…
Saylor.org: Sidestepping Debt: Student Loans and Saylor
[On July 1st, interest rates on U.S. federally-subsidized student loans doubled. The event was a re-hash of a similar drama last year in which a rate hike was averted by Congressional action. Discussions of alternative systems are back in fashion, such as the income-based repayment models used in Australia, Britain, and -- maybe -- Oregon. [...]…
Udacity: High School Math Teacher
Daniel We love hearing from Udacians who have discovered and developed their passion for programming. Daniel Wilson, formerly a middle and high school math and science teacher, was able to develop his programming skills with Udacity, and started his new job as a software developer three weeks ago! Congratulations, Daniel! Daniel shares his story below: I worked as a middle and high school math and science teacher for a number of years, but was always frustrated by the lack of technology resources available to me. After some idle hours spent learning to code with Codecademy, I was given the opportunity to teach a Computer Programming course. Along with my students, I dove into the finer points of Javascript and Python during the day, and in the evenings I took Udacity's Intro to Computer Science course. I took the Web Development course, and then the Programming Languages course as I became more and more engrossed with coding. Without ever really realizing it, I had decided to start…

Khan Academy: Edsurge article: Are teachers at the table or on the menu?
Edsurge writer Christina Quattrocchi shares with readers about the impact of Khan Academy’s teacher trainings that are happening across the country this summer. Are teachers at the table or on the menu? No company would dispute the value of teacher perspectives. However, often times it seems teachers become specimens to be studied, rather than vital partners. Yet, giving teachers time, training, and building trust are vital steps to ensuring products gets used and used effectively. This week, Khan Academy showed the industry one way to bring teachers to the table by hosting its own free teacher trainings in Redwood City. As the first of many around the country, the workshop hoped to teach math teachers about the nuances behind each of Khan’s education tools and offer different ways to implement them. By the end of the day, teachers were charged with developing a “frame of mind” around what Khan could do for students. The full day of trainin…

Udacity:
Neil, whose journey from shelf-stacking to software engineering you can read here, has some especially great advice for other aspiring software engineers: update your online presence and create a website with a project portfolio! Neil's website Neil elaborates, After working on my skills, I basically updated my CV online. Created a website with example projects on it, and ended up with about 5 phone calls a day from agents. There was a real shortage of C# developers in the UK and the fact that I didn't have a 'traditional' degree didn't matter as long as I could code. I would advise anyone considering a career in web development to start by getting their own domain name as soon as possible. Having an example page to show what you can do, no matter how little will set you apart from the competition. http://blog.udacity.com/feeds/posts/default…

Khan Academy: MCAT Training Camp: Day 1
From Khan Academy’s Rishi Desai, MD: Today is July 15, 2013. It’s the first day of the MCAT training camp, and it’s also my 32nd birthday. What a great way to get things started. Our kick-off meeting with all of the video-makers was this morning at 7am. Folks trickled in over 15 minutes and the group was generally quiet, since they were still strangers to one another. We began with simple introductions (name, home institution, etc…). Pat, medical student, ColumbiaShreena, CAM student, GeorgetownWill, teacher, Teach for America… As we went around the circle, body language started to change and smiles started to emerge. Everyone relaxed and we took our first step towards getting to know each other. I went through the project background, our collaboration with the AAMC and RWJF, and our plans going forward. We discussed goals and expectations for the week, as well as some basics tips/tricks for…
