Teachers now have the power to create Khan Academy accounts for their students who are under 13! We’re working to make it as simple as possible for teachers to get their classes started with Khan Academy, and this is just a first step. Before creating the accounts, make sure you have permission from your students’ parents. You can download our sample permission slip to send home with your students. Then, to add your students, visit Coach > Manage Students and click the green “Add new students” button. This opens the form for inviting students by their email addresses (if they’re over 13): If your students are under 13 and do not have email addresses through Google Apps for Education, choose “create Khan Academy accounts for them.” Here, you’ll create a username and password for your first student and enter their birthdate and their parent’s email address: You’ll receive a confirmation and then you can create your next…
Udemy: Challenges of Online Learning: 4 Ways to Keep Your Online Student Engaged
When I set out to take my Social Media Training Courses online, I realized early on that online courses only work if people actually consume the content. It’s one thing to sit through a live training. Sure, retention may be low, but at least you do learn something. But one of the main challenges of online learning is that unless the learner has the discipline and the motivation to focus and watch the lectures, they learn nothing at all.... Continue reading »…

: Teaching about Literary Symbolism in the Online Classroom
Certainly you remember the Lit Professor in college who saw symbolism in everything? White was for purity and innocence. An owl referred to wisdom. Saylor.org: Ninja skills: how do you manage your online learning?
I recently had the opportunity to go through (a lot) of old papers and notes from elementary school, secondary school, and college. I saw years of attempting to stay organized: three-ring binders, portfolios, spiral notebooks, bound notebooks, index cards, loose papers, and the odd floppy disk. After nineteen years of schooling, I was just starting to [...]…

Coursera: Instructor Profile: Larry Randles Lagerstrom, getting creative with Einstein!
Editor’s note: Dr. Larry Randles Lagerstrom from Stanford University will be teaching a new course on “Understanding Einstein: The Special Theory of Relativity,” starting on April 8. We caught up with him and asked him a few questions about his background and his course. “Nearly everyone has heard of Einstein—he is the most recognizable scientist of all time, he was chosen as ‘Person of the Century’ by Time magazine and, if nothing else, his quotations seem to be all over the Internet (some of which are not actually by him, but that’s another story). They also may have heard that he came up with some of his revolutionary ideas, such as the special theory of relativity, while working as a lowly patent clerk. And they vaguely know that there’s some esoteric and mind-bending stuff involved. But they may not realize that the real story of his early troubles and triumphs is more interesting (and relevant) than the myths, and that it…
Khan Academy: khanacademy.org gets a makeover, bug fixes, and UX improvements
Khan Academy has come a long way from when I first joined waaaaay back in 2010. The company and product have both matured. The content and experience that we offer the world has grown and changed dramatically, but this is the slow steady change of iterative improvement. And even though we’ve added over 1,000 videos and hundreds of interactive exercises to the site, that change isn’t always obvious. It’s going to be hard to miss the changes we’re releasing today. Current: New: Today, we’re launching the first piece of what will eventually be a major redesign of Khan Academy. This first step is part visual refresh, part re-focusing of the interface that folks use every day, and part foundation for future changes. This change should help to clarify exactly how our content is organized and what order we recommend proceeding through tutorials while fixing a host of other small bugs (like progress indicators not showing up or not being properly aligned).
