Udacity: Words Into Works: Moving From Passive to Active Learning

2013-03-05 15:00:00

Guest Post by Dale StephensAuthor Bio: Dale Stephens was homeschooled and then unschooled. Now he leads UnCollege.org. Perigee/Penguin recently published his first book: "Hacking your Education". What the naysayers of self-directed learning fail to understand is that an education in the 60’s was different than an education today. Today, it’s freer than it’s ever been, and the playing field has leveled, regardless of income. Right now, you have access to practically all of the world’s information – yet, the ramification of this very access still hasn’t grabbed the attention of the public domain yet. Sure, people are talking. But it’s not popular belief – college is still, in many people’s minds, the only way to trail blaze a path to success. Too often we fail to answer a student's question: ‘What am I learning this for?' Yet, let’s be honest: the question of why we are learning what we are learning is one that needs to be…

In a recent article in Learning Solutions Magazine, “Why Games Don’t Teach,” Ruth Clark says it’s “not that games can’t teach, but that advocating games as a main or even frequent instructional strategy is misleading.” Karl Kapp disagrees and offers this counterpoint, including evidence from research showing that games are effective teachers.

Coursera: My Coursera Experience: Modern Poetry for a Physics Major

2013-03-02 18:22:41

Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of guest posts from Courserians, called “My Coursera Experience”. My name is Ines Cifuentes. I am 58 and living with Stage 4 breast cancer. One of the tough things about advanced cancer is how much it takes away. My days are long as I can no longer work. I took the Coursera course, “Modern and Contemporary American Poetry”, taught by Al Filreis of the University of Pennsylvania. I chose it because as a physics major in college I didn’t have time to take a poetry course. When I saw that we would be reading William Carlos Williams, one of my favorite poets, I signed up. I didn’t learn about Coursera until the course had already started so I began the third week in and tried to catch up. I never did; I am now signed up to take it again in September. I am very happy that I can do that. And they are adding Wallace Stevens! It was wonderful to be able to take a class on poetry taught by a fabulous tea…

Udacity: Why Take Our Interactive 3D Graphics Course?

2013-03-02 00:50:00

If you're looking for a good reason to take our Interactive 3D Graphics Course, then we've got a few. For starters, picture yourself drifting on the gentle waters of a calm, moonlit sea.  Off to the left, a lighthouse flashes its circular warning over the waves. The moon sits low in the sky just to the right, its light splintering across the dark water as each swell passes. As you move your boat to the right, the moon slides quietly behind the clouds … now picture that that scene directly in your browser, integrated with 2D web page elements.  Or, just take a look at it here. (psst, try this on Chrome or Firefox; it won’t work on Internet Explorer and might require a little set up for Safari.  If this link or the ones below don’t work, then you might need to check your setup). And if that doesn’t get you excited about interactive 3D graphics, take a look at some more eye candy from across the intertubes, like: Giant morphing fireball Ramshackle…

ka-implementations: Check out a cool new tool that’s great for teachers! Stephanie Chang, one of our software developers, created this exercise browser to help teachers easily see the different types of problems we have in each exercise.  Watch the video above to see how to use the tool, or check it out yourself at www.khanacademy.org/r/exercise-browser. Watch out—the exercise browser is a bit buggy right now and works best in Chrome and Safari.  But don’t worry, it will only get better with time.

2013-02-28 18:09:00

Two new universities joining Coursera are particularly exciting for two reasons: (1) they’re the first universities on Coursera located in Latin America, and (2) both universities will be offering select courses in Spanish! The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Tecnológico de Monterrey are extremely high-ranking and well-respected universities located in Mexico, and will be offering classes across a broad range of disciplines. Ensuring Public Access to Scientific Research

In May of last year, a petition was added to WhiteHouse.gov’s We the People site, requesting that the government of the United States “require free access over the Internet to scientific journal articles arising from taxpayer-funded research.” Much research that receives federal funding (which is to say, citizens’ tax dollars) is not subject to any kind [...]…
