Addressing students' interests in 20th century Western Music Culture and incorporating music theory, the course examines 20th century Western music. By combining theory and practice, the course not only aims to provide a clear view of the historical development of the music, but also emphasizes the training of aural skills and the accumulation of musical knowledge. The course covers not only classical music, such as neo-classical, expressionism, nationalism and other genres, but also explores in depth jazz, rock, and pop music of the 20th century. While studying Chinese music and other forms of national folk music in the 20th century world music context, students will also analyze large and complex works such as opera, musicals, and film music. By enhancing students’ understanding of 20th century Western music (classical music, pop music, folk music, comprehensive art) as a foundation, three core questions will be addressed: what is music, what is the 20th century Western music, and what is effective listening? The course aims to guide students to examine the three listening modes of 20th century Western music with the hope of forming a diverse and multi-faceted, knowledge and understanding of the 20th-century Western music culture phenomena, expanding students’ horizons, enhancing their ability to reason by analogy, and promoting cross-disciplinary, creative development.

As modern life science research becomes ever more quantitative, the need for mathematical modeling becomes ever more important. A deeper and mechanistic understanding of complicated biological processes can only come from the understanding of complex interactions at many different scales, for instance, the molecular, the cellular, individual organisms and population levels.

In this course, through case studies, we will examine some simplified and idealized mathematical models and their underlying mathematical framework so that we learn how to construct simplified representations of complex biological processes and phenomena. We will learn how to analyze these models both qualitatively and quantitatively and interpret the results in a biological fashion by providing predictions and hypotheses that experimentalists may verify.

Cultural Geography of the World is one of the most popular undergraduate courses at Peking University. It is an inclusive, general introductory course, combining natural and cultural geography with history and art. Through the lens of humanism and independent thinking, learners will be encouraged to observe and analyze cultural phenomena from spatial and time perspectives. This course has 12 chapters: The basic research method of world cultural geography; The division of world culture areas; The world's population distribution and migration of population; Origin of agriculture; Diffusion and regional differences; The origin and spread of the city; Regional differences and characteristics of urban morphology; The spatial distribution of the major languages, religions, ethnicities in the world and their relationship; The great geographical discovery and the formation of the world colonial system; World geopolitics and the spatial structures of the world geography system; Global economic integration; Urbanization and its political, economic, social impacts. Using relevant domestic and foreign textbooks, publications, maps, photos, and charts to show the difference and the changing progress of spatial patterns of the cultures, learners will be asked to observe and analyze cultural phenomena with geographic and spatial vision and to consider the development and changing process of the cultural phenomena in light of time sequence. The course will include a midterm and final exam.

1967 年,印度尼西亚、泰国、新加坡、菲律宾四国外长和马来西亚副总理在曼谷举行会议,发表了《曼谷宣言》(《东南亚国家联盟成立宣言》),正式宣告东南亚国家 联盟(简称“东盟”)成立。20世纪80年代后,文莱(1984年)、越南(1995年)、老挝(1997年)、缅甸(1997年)和柬埔寨(1999 年)5国先后加入东盟,使这一组织涵盖整个东南亚地区。

由于中国与东南亚在地理位置上的相邻关系,奠定了东南亚地区在中国对外关系中的 “首要”地位。随着中国与东南亚交流层次的逐步深入,中国扩大了国际影响力,积累了丰富的开展国际交流的经验。但是,由于中国民众对于东南亚文化的了解程 度还有提升的空间,从而也在中国与东南亚的交流中造成了一定的问题。本课程将将系统梳理东南亚文化发展进程的基础上,以兼顾东南亚传统文化与现代文化的特 点,以具体的文化现象为中心,为同学们呈现东南亚文化的多样性与独特性。
 
"Southeast Asia" is the term which appeared during World War II. In Chinese history documents, this region was called “Nan Yang” or “Nan Hai”. From the beginning of the 3rd century AD, Indian culture, Chinese culture, Islamic culture and Western culture have moved into this area. After a long process of localization, external culture and the native culture were fully fused, forming a unique cultural expression and cultural characteristics.

In 1967, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia issued "Bangkok Declaration" to declare the establishment of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established. After the 1980s, Brunei (1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos (1997), Myanmar (1997) and Cambodia (1999) has joined the ASEAN, so that this organization covering the entire Southeast Asian region.

As the geographical neighbor of China, the Southeast Asian region plays "top" role in China's foreign relations. With the gradual deepening of exchanges between China and Southeast Asia, misunderstanding of cultures caused some problems. In order to improve the understanding of Chinese people about the neighbor countries, this course will show the development steps of Southeast Asian culture, and explain the traditional and modern culture features of Southeast Asia through the specific cultural phenomenons.

授课形式是什么样的?

Course format

This course consists lecture videos, reading materials, assignments, discussion and final exams. Each week consists of 3-5 units. Each unit is a 10-minutes lecture video. Each week will have one quiz. Students are encouraged to interact with and help each other through the course online discussion forum.

Grading Policy

Here is how the final grade for the course will be calculated:

  1. Weekly quizzes (Weighting: 20%) Each quiz will contain 10 questions, and you will have 7 days to submit it.
  2. Bi-weekly assignments (Weighting: 20%) Every two weeks, you will have 1 problem set containing 3 questions, and 7 days to submit it.
  3. Writing assignment (Weighting: 20%) Your writing will be peer-assessed and assigned a grade by five of your fellow students.
  4. Final exam (Weighting: 40%) Timed 2 hour exam, 40 questions. Complete in 1 sitting.

Computers are an important tool for problem solving and are deeply involved in modern life. Computers perform operations on data. What is the logical relationship among data? How is data stored in computers? What algorithms are required to solve particular problems? These are the questions that will be answered in “Data Structures and Algorithms,” an important core course in Computer Science. The course also introduces students to fundamental data structures and classical algorithms used in more specialized courses, including Operating Systems, Software Engineering, Database Systems, Compiler Principles, Computer Graphics and Human Computer Interaction.

Niklaus Wirth described the important and indivisible link between algorithms and data structure in his book, Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs.

The course will build on Wirth’s ideas as it helps students improve their knowledge of theory and their ability to think abstractly to solve problems. Building on a solid theoretical foundation, students will analyze problems using data and algorithm abstraction. Students will learn how to organize data efficiently and make tradeoffs between space and time complexity, design efficient and effective algorithms, and implement high quality programs to solve complex real-world problems. After studying this course, students will be well prepared for further study and research in engineering and other computer-related areas.

This is an intermediate-level course appropriate for sophomore students majoring in computer science or other science/engineering disciplines. Students should have learned "introduction to computing", with the knowledge of structured and object-oriented programming.

This course is presented in two eight-week sessions.

Students who score 60% or higher will receive an Honor Code Certificate.
