This class is presented in a workshop format. After a short review of some basics and coverage of a few new topics, the workshop focus is on real-world CSS issues and applications. Weeks one and two review some material from Intro to CSS H151 and introduce some new material for application during the workshop. Weeks three through six focus on projects from the required text, Eric Meyer on CSS. Students may choose to create a new Web site for the workshop or may use an existing site to apply the concepts learned throughout the class. The final project requires the conversion of an existing Web page and the application of the concepts and techniques learned during the workshop. Valid CSS and XHTML markup are required throughout the entire class.
Cascading Style Sheets have become an important component of W3C recommendations. XHTML Strict relies on stylesheets for all stylistic presentation, the Web Accessibility Initiative makes use of CSS for improving access for the disabled, and new work on HTML and XML will continue to make heavy use of CSS for the future. In this course, you will learn the basics of separating style from structure within an HTML document.
Course prepares you to advise clients or your own organization on the design of contracts and screening policies when one of the parties has an information advantage over the other. For example, students study the design of patent licenses (the licensor knows more about the market), the design of social systems to reduce spam (the spam sender knows more about the content before the recipient decides whether to read), and the design of performance contracts for professional services (e.g., consultants, contract programmers, etc., when the contractor knows more than the employer about her level of effort). This course follows SI 646. Prerequisite(s): SI 562 & 563 or equivalent course in intermediate microeconomics. Course Level: Graduate This Work, SI 680 - Contracting and Signaling, by Jeffrey K. MacKie-Mason is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license.
