What background is required to participate in this course?
No specific background is required for this course, but it is aimed at professionals who have (or would like to have) some amount of decision-making capability in their organization. This course is for leaders and aspiring leaders in healthcare and allied sectors including telecommunications, health insurance, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, device manufacturing, policy and government, investment, consulting and innovation.

Can I still enroll if the course has started?
Yes, but look for additional announcements from course staff about assessments that will need to be completed to qualify for the RiceX Certificate.

What types of certificates does RiceX offer?
Upon successful completion of RiceX courses, learners will be awarded a RiceX Certificate from Rice University.

How are certificates determined?
Earning a certificate is determined by the individual course. Generally, learners must complete all course requirements at a level pre-determined by the course instructor to earn a certificate.

What happens if I do not pass or cannot complete a course?
There is no limit on the number of times you can enroll in RiceX courses. Many of RiceX courses are offered on a routine basis and you will be able to enroll in the next offering.

How can I earn a certificate for the series?
Some RiceX courses are part of a series. Usually you can enroll in just one course or the entire series.  Often you do not have to decide to complete the full series when you begin. Participants can earn a series certificate if they satisfactorily fulfill the requirements for completing the series.

What happens after I sign up?
Once you have registered and paid for a course, you will receive a confirmation email from RiceX.

What time is the class?'
Courses materials are available 24 hours a day once the course has officially opened.  Some courses include live webcasts with instructors scheduled at a specific time. The webcasts are recorded and available to participants who are not able to join.  

What if I have a question or concern for the instructor?
You will be part of a dynamic global learning community of fellow professional participants available 24-7 to help within the framework of the honor code. Course engagement managers monitor the discussion forum and can address your questions or forward to the instructor.

How can I meet/find other course participants?
Every RiceX course includes a Participant Discussion Forum where you can interact with other participating professionals. The Forum is guided by an honor code. You can also connect through Google+ Hangouts and interactive activities like live webcasts that may be included in a course.

Is there an exam at the end?
No, there is no exam. Instead, there is a final project at the end of the course.

Sustainability, defined by Rice’s Energy and Environment Institute (EEi), is energy security, affordability, and environmental responsibility as the three required foundational pillars.    

We will explore and understand the fundamental principles of energy sustainability from the perspective of the techno/economic framework and maturity of the market in the geography of interest. Global impact and the effects of global commerce will drive investment and the hierarchy of the three fundamentals. With an emphasis on the oil and gas sector, petrochemicals, and power industry, thought leaders will discuss these principles with participants in the context of real-world industry examples and share their personal insights on best practices and future trends.

The four-week course will examine three fundamentals of energy sustainability and their application in today’s dynamic industry landscape in oil and gas (upstream, midstream, downstream), petrochemicals (upstream and downstream), power and energy trading:

1. Available and secure supply of energy. A portfolio of options and interconnections of supply and demand for long-term access and systems analysis of best available options.
2. Affordable and competitive cost of energy. An analysis of economic competitiveness and investment options for not only generation but a systems analysis of total cost impact.
3. Environmental responsibility in the production and consumption of energy. An analysis of technical options and the optimizing of local and international policy and regulations.

Through guest presentations and interviews with business executives and thought leaders, case studies, cutting-edge research and interactive learning experiences, participants will build the relevant knowledge and capabilities to effectively deliver consulting and support services effectively to specific clients and enterprises in the market. Assessment will include methods such as quizzes, written reflections, individual/team projects, etc.

SCOPE: To create an interactive learning module to help reinforce the concept of maintaining lab safety where hazardous materials are used in various laboratories.

Academic laboratories where hazardous materials are used are potentially dangerous places. Taking the necessary precautions to avoid unnecessary hazards is paramount for the safety of all involved.

In this course, you will learn about lab safety through an interactive game called "Don't Endanger the Owls".

The characters in the game include Wise Owl, Owlet, and the Zombie Squirrels. Owlet is the student figure and Wise Owl is Owlet’s sage advisor / professor figure.

In the game, your goal is to stop the Zombie Squirrels from spreading their Zombiegen by finding an “Anti-Zombiegen” in the lab that will counteract the effects of the Zombiegen. In order to find the Anti-Zombiegen, you will journey through three lab rooms: the biology lab, the chemistry lab and the analytical lab. Along the way, you will learn safe laboratory practices. In the end, if you follows safe laboratory practices, you will find the Anti-Zombiegen and saves the campus from the Zombiegen outbreak.

“Don’t Endanger the Owls” is a collaboration between the instructors of Rice University’s Responsible Conduct of Research Graduate Course, Rice’s Environmental Health and Safety and HyperWindows Inc.

When you're sick, you may wonder, "Why me?" But the real question should be, "Why am I not sick all the time?" You might even ask, "Why does my body respond with a fever, and is it really a good idea to lower it?" This course explores immunology, how the body defends itself from constant assault by parasites and pathogens. This course will present the fundamentals of both innate and adaptive immunity, emphasizing functional interactions among cells and organs. We will cover signaling, pathogen recognition and the division of labor among myeloid, lymphoid and supporting cells. The subject matter will also supply health professionals and biomedical researchers with the basic vocabulary and concepts necessary to understand both clinical press releases and primary literature. The course materials also provide support to other immunology instructors by presenting difficult concepts in creative ways using analogies and models.

PHYS201x follows introductory physics courses with a more detailed treatment of oscillators, waves on strings, and electromagnetic waves. In addition to deriving and solving the wave equation, mathematical methods will be introduced on making approximations, describing oscillations with complex numbers, and synthesizing functions with Fourier series. Optical reflection and refraction will be derived, as well as the lens equation and elements of geometrical optics. Optical interference, diffraction, and polarization will be covered in detail, including the role of diffraction in image formation. PHYS201x will have weekly video lectures that explain the material through detailed derivations and demonstrations. There will be weekly homework, a discussion forum, and two exams. Eight weeks of content will be presented, and one week devoted to each self-paced exam.

The immune system plays a fascinating and vital role in the human body, recognizing outside threats and protecting our bodies against disease. This introductory immunology courses will help you understand the interactions of the immune system, and the jargon scientists use to describe immune function.

This is the second of a two-part course. In the first part we learned about innate immunity and B cell function. This second part covers T cell function and coordination of the immune response.

This immunology course surveys the cells of the immune system and describes how they talk to each other, receive information from the rest of the body and coordinate your defenses.

PHYS 102.1x serves as an introduction to electricity and magnetism, following the standard second semester college physics sequence. Part 1 begins with electric charge in matter, the forces between charges, the electric field, Gauss’s Law, and the electric potential. Electric current and resistance are introduced, and then DC circuits are described, including time-dependent behavior with resistors and capacitors. PHYS 102.1x consists of 5 weekly learning sequences, each with ~1.5 hours of video lectures, conceptual lecture problems, and online homework questions. The course concludes with an online exam during the 6th week.  

What are the prerequisites?
We will assume that you are familiar with vectors, that you know how to calculate integrals, and that you have had introductory mechanics. These topics will be briefly reviewed as needed, but not in a systematic way. If you have not had classes in these topics it may be possible to complete the course with extra study.

What textbook is required?
The course will not strictly follow or make assignments from a specific textbook.  Any recent freshman physics textbook will suffice. Reading assignments will be given by topic, including links to several free online physics textbooks.

Protein is found in virtually every part of your body. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.

In this biology course you will learn how proteins drive almost all living processes.

Proteins manufactured by cells perform a broad range of essential functions — the molecular workforce of living organisms.

You will learn how proteins are the cellular manifestation of genetic information. They are assembled into a polymeric structure from monomers derived in part from components in our diet. Proteins catalyze metabolic reactions, replicate DNA, respond to stimuli, provide movement, and much more. Using video lectures, articles, case studies, and molecular models, we will explore how proteins are constructed, how they fold into 3-dimensional shapes, the kinds of bonds that hold these folded structures together, and the immense range of roles that proteins assume ‑ from structural proteins found in muscle to catalysts for cellular chemical reactions.

Purification and characterization are essential to understand protein structure and function, and we will identify a variety of methods to uncover how these tiny machines drive almost all living processes.

What is religion? What is Hip Hop? Are they the same thing? Do they overlap? Over six weeks we’ll get a sense of how some individuals answer these questions, and you’ll get the tools you need to explore these questions for yourselves.

We will start our time together with some basic assumptions, the most important being a willingness to think about Hip Hop and religion as cultures that wrestle with the huge questions of our existence: Who are we? Why are we? Where are we?  on hip You will also need to be open to the possibility of Hip Hop as a language through which these complex and religious questions are presented, explored, and interpreted.

As this course unfolds, we’ll look closely into the relationship between Hip Hop culture and religion. We will explore the ways in which Hip Hop culture discusses and provides life meaning in complex ways through  (1) a discussion of the history and content of rap music; (2) an examination of religion in rap music; (3) an exploration of the religious sensibilities of rap artists; and (4) a discussion of the implications of the connection between rap and religion.

We will accomplish this through a unique mix of videos, readings, music, images, stories and behind-the scenes insider perspectives.
