Hoy en día, más del 80 por ciento de la población en América Latina y el Caribe vive en zonas urbanas, y para el 2050 será casi el 90 por ciento. Esta creciente urbanización plantea desafíos importantes para los más de 15 mil municipios que existen en la región, exigiendo a los mismos hacer frente a las demandas de nuevos empleos, servicios urbanos, escuelas, transporte, viviendas y seguridad de forma consciente y planificada. Estas ciudades quieren avanzar hacia el desarrollo sostenible, buscando la manera de crecer económicamente, de forma inclusiva y respetando el medioambiente. ¿Pero cómo se avanza hacia el sueño de la sostenibilidad? ¿Cómo conseguimos crear actividad económica sin contaminar el aire y los ríos? ¿Cómo podemos crear riqueza y que los recursos lleguen a todas las personas? ¿Cómo hacer ciudades más seguras y participativas?

Para reflexionar sobre estas y otras preguntas, el BID ha creado un curso que busca fortalecer en los participantes las capacidades para gestionar el desarrollo sostenible de las ciudades, a través del dominio conceptual, procedimental y actitudinal de las principales áreas de competencia de la ciudad y de la herramienta de la Iniciativa de Ciudades Emergentes y Sostenibles del BID, permitiéndoles desarrollar habilidades y construir estrategias innovadoras y multisectoriales para dar respuesta a los desafíos de la sostenibilidad.

La preparación de este curso fue financiada por el Fondo de Fortalecimiento de la Capacidad Institucional (ICSF), gracias al aporte del Gobierno de la República Popular de China.

Entre 1950 e 2010, a taxa de urbanização da América Latina passou de 41% a 79%. Caso esta tendência se mantenha, a taxa de urbanização em 2030 será de cerca de 90%, fazendo da região a mais urbanizada do planeta.

Essa tendência consolida a cidade como o centro do desenvolvimento econômico e humano da região. A cidade está criando trabalho, está inovando, está repensando seus sistemas de saúde e educação, transporte, está fazendo frente às mudanças do clima, está abrindo espaços para o debate e a socialização. Para que esse dinamismo possa traduzir-se em um fenômeno exitoso, a cidade deve aprender a planejar seu presente pensando em seu futuro, buscando o equilíbrio entre crescimento econômico, a inclusão social e o respeito ao meio ambiente. É, portanto, responsabilidade das cidades melhorar a qualidade de vida das gerações presentes sem comprometer o bem estar das gerações futuras.

Com o objetivo de responder a este desafio, o BID criou um curso que busca fortalecer os conhecimentos e capacidades dos participantes em gerir o desenvolvimento sustentável de suas cidades. E para isso, o curso parte da premissa que a sustentabilidade das cidades só será alcançada por meio de uma perspectiva integrada e intersetorial; uma perspectiva integral, onde se trabalhe de maneira conjunta os desafios econômicos, fiscais, urbanos, ambientais, institucionais e de governabilidade das cidades junto com uma perspectiva intersetorial, onde as diferentes áreas e níveis de governo se coordenem e que se articulem com o setor privado e com a sociedade civil.

Com o objetivo de entender melhor essa perspectiva, o curso analisa a situação, os desafios setoriais e intersetoriais que as cidades encontram na gestão das principais áreas de sua competência: finanças subnacionais, desenvolvimento produtivo, planejamento urbano, transporte, segurança cidadã, água, ar etc. Desta forma, com o objetivo de abordar o planejamento do desenvolvimento sustentável das cidades médias latino americanas, o curso apresenta a “Iniciativa Cidades Emergentes e Sustentáveis”, uma ferramenta de gestão que permite dar sentido ao trabalho analítico das dimensões/desafios de forma integrada.

Assim como na América Latina e no Caribe, o Brasil possui grandes desafios ambientais, urbanos e fiscais para a sustentabilidade de suas cidades. Dentre eles se destacam os altos índices de violência - 25,8 mortes violentas por 100 mil habitantes segundo o Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública; a desigualdade urbana, uma vez que o país é o 4º mais desigual da América Latina e Caribe; e a vulnerabilidade diante de desastres naturais, onde se calcula, por exemplo, que a reconstrução das cidades cariocas devastadas pelas enchentes e pelos deslizamentos de 2011 custou 1,3% do PIB do estado do Rio de Janeiro; ou ainda, degradação ambiental, com um índice de 63% de esgoto sendo lançado nos corpos hídricos sem nenhum tratamento, segundo o MCidades.

Além de fornecer conceitos e uma visão abrangente da situação do Brasil em relação à sustentabilidade das cidades, neste curso serão abordados alguns desafios dos municípios, bem como exemplos práticos de como esses problemas estão sendo enfrentados.

Para que una organización pueda avanzar en la dirección adecuada son necesarias dos cosas: saber a dónde ir y orientar los esfuerzos de las personas que hacen posible el movimiento.

En todos los grupos (familiares, deportivos, asociaciones...) existen personas que ejercen mayor influencia que otras y a las que se suele denominar líderes.

En las organizaciones los líderes no sólo se encuentran dentro de las estructuras formales de la organización, sino también en los grupos informales de trabajo. Los líderes deberían crear y mantener un ambiente interno en el cual el personal pueda llegar a involucrarse totalmente en el logro de los objetivos de la organización, construyendo un puente entre el entorno externo y el grupo, las tareas que realizan y los procesos internos del grupo que permiten realizarlas. Ayudando así a identificar, interpretar y alinear los requerimientos de los clientes internos y externos.

Dentro de un contexto de organizaciones “planas” con pocos niveles de mando, los líderes deben asumir las responsabilidades que tradicionalmente estaban repartidas entre las jerarquías de dirección. Lo cierto es que los miembros del grupo necesitan un apoyo activo por parte del líder para poder cumplir sus responsabilidades con justicia y honestidad. Por ello, el papel del líder debe cambiar, pasando de ser un planificador o alguien que toma decisiones, a ser un entrenador, orientador, emprendedor y facilitador que anima y asegura una planificación eficaz y una toma de decisiones distribuida. Un error muy común en este proceso de cambio es que los líderes pasan de un extremo al otro, esto es, de un estilo "ordeno y mando" a la abdicación. Sin embargo, lo que se precisa de ellos es un papel situado en algún punto intermedio entre ambos extremos. En este curso te enseñaremos a encontrar este punto adecuado que te convertirá en un líder eficaz.

This course focuses on providing skills and resources for you and your family to manage life with diabetes.

You will learn what diabetes is, the difference between type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes as well as how they are treated and why management is so important. 

You will learn about recommended food choices and eating habits for those living with diabetes as well as the best types of exercise to help manage blood glucose levels. Lastly, we will discuss overall strategies for keeping well and managing your condition including sick day management, hypoglycaemia management and travel.

Vision may feel effortless: you open your eyes, and the world appears. But the process of focusing light into image on the back of the eye and translating it into meaningful nerve signals is incredibly complex. The retina and visual cortex are packed with intricate processing circuitry, and have been a mystery to neuroscientists for centuries. Now, answers are beginning to emerge.
 
Today, the visual system is often called the model system for neuroscience: its findings are relevant to all other areas and to investigating the deeper mysteries of the brain’s microstructure and function. In this course, we take you from the physics of focusing light onto the retina, to the processing of colors, form, and motion, and finally to the interpretation of visual information in the cortex. We distill the mysteries of the visual system by posing questions and investigating them in a series of thematic, animated videos. This journey through the eye, retina and brain will (quite literally) change how you see the world.

This course covers matrix theory and linear algebra, emphasizing topics useful in other disciplines such as physics, economics and social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. It parallels the combination of theory and applications in Professor Strang’s textbook Introduction to Linear Algebra.

This course has been designed for independent study. It provides everything you will need to understand the concepts covered in the course. The materials include:

This course offers a rigorous treatment of linear algebra, including vector spaces, systems of linear equations, bases, linear independence, matrices, determinants, eigenvalues, inner products, quadratic forms, and canonical forms of matrices. Compared with 18.06 Linear Algebra, more emphasis is placed on theory and proofs.

This is a basic subject on matrix theory and linear algebra. Emphasis is given to topics that will be useful in other disciplines, including systems of equations, vector spaces, determinants, eigenvalues, similarity, and positive definite matrices.

This is a communication intensive supplement to Linear Algebra (18.06). The main emphasis is on the methods of creating rigorous and elegant proofs and presenting them clearly in writing. The course starts with the standard linear algebra syllabus and eventually develops the techniques to approach a more advanced topic: abstract root systems in a Euclidean space.

Yes. This course corresponds to the Division of Statistics and Scientific Computing titled “SDS329C: Practical Linear Algebra”, one option for satisfying the linear algebra requirement for the undergraduate degree in computer science.

Online learners who successfully complete LAFF can obtain an edX certificate. This certificate indicates that you have successfully completed the course, but does not include a grade.

Must I work every problem correctly to receive the certificate?

No, you are neither required nor expected to complete every problem.

What textbook do I need for the course?

What are the principles by which assignment due dates are established?

There is a window of 19 days between the material release and the due date for the homework of that week. While we encourage you to complete a week’s work before the launch of the next week, we realize that life sometimes gets in the way so we have established a flexible cushion. Please don’t procrastinate. The course closes 25 May 2015. This is to give you nineteen days from the release of the final to complete the course.

Are there any special system requirements?

You may need at least 768MB of RAM memory and 2-4GB of free hard drive space. You should be able to successfully access the course using Chrome and Firefox.

This mini-course is intended for students who would like a refresher on the basics of linear algebra. The course attempts to provide the motivation for "why" linear algebra is important in addition to "what" linear algebra is. Students will learn concepts in linear algebra by applying them in computer programs. At the end of the course, you will have coded your own personal library of linear algebra functions that you can use to solve real-world problems.

The course is an introduction to linear and discrete optimization - an important part of computational mathematics with a wide range of applications in many areas of everyday life.

This course will cover the very basic ideas in optimization. Topics include the basic theory and algorithms behind linear and integer linear programming along with some of the important applications. We will also explore the theory of convex polyhedra using linear programming.

Learn the analysis of circuits including resistors, capacitors, and inductors. This course is directed towards people who are in science or engineering fields outside of the disciplines of electrical or computer engineering.

Phenomena as diverse as the motion of the planets, the spread of a disease, and the oscillations of a suspension bridge are governed by differential equations. This course is an introduction to the mathematical theory of ordinary differential equations and follows a modern dynamical systems approach. MATH226 is essentially the edX equivalent of MA226; a one-semester course in ordinary differential equations taken by more than 500 students per year at Boston University. It is divided into three parts. MATH226.2x is the second part.

This course provides students with the basic analytical and computational tools of linear partial differential equations (PDEs) for practical applications in science engineering, including heat / diffusion, wave, and Poisson equations. Analytics emphasize the viewpoint of linear algebra and the analogy with finite matrix problems. Numerics focus on finite-difference and finite-element techniques to reduce PDEs to matrix problems. The Julia Language (a free, open-source environment) is introduced and used in homework for simple examples.

This course is a study of speech sounds: how we produce and perceive them and their acoustic properties. It explores the influence of the production and perception systems on phonological patterns and sound change. Acoustic analysis and experimental techniques are also discussed.
