When you meet a new person, it is hard to know what to expect.  You may not be able to read the person or understand what they mean. Even if you want to have a good relationship with them, this lack of understanding can make interactions tense, unpredictable and scary! The same is true for a lot of people as they encounter statistics and mathematical ways of working with data.  Statistics can be confusing and opaque.  Symbols, Greek letters, very large and very small numbers, and how to interpret all of this can leave to feeling cold and disengaged—even fearful and resentful.

But in the modern information age, having a healthy relationship with statistics can make life a whole lot easier. We are constantly faced with an onslaught of data and claims about it—from news articles, to Facebook and blog posts, casual and professional conversations, reports at our workplace, advertising, and claims from politicians and public officials. How can we process that information, make sense of it, evaluate truth claims, and put ourselves in a position to act on the information?  One of the most important ways is by befriending statistics and consistently using statistical ways of thinking.
 
The purpose of this course, then is to help you develop a functional, satisfying, and useful life-long relationship with statistics. To achieve that goal, we will take a non-technical approach—you will learn how statistics work and why they are so helpful in evaluating the world of information that is around us. You will learn about the logic of statistical thinking and the concepts (rather than the mathematical details and probability theory) that guide statistical inferences and conclusions.
 
You do not need to be a math whiz to take this course. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide (or just be able to use a calculator to do that!), you will be more than able to handle what will happen as this relationship develops.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Identify the most important features of a data set
• Select a statistical test based on the features of the data
• Think like a statistical detective
• Understand the relationship between two different characteristics or variables
• Perform some simple statistical calculations and draw some conclusions from real data
• Hopefully, love stats! 

We’ll do all of this using entertaining examples related to real-life situations we all encounter in everyday life.

We will explore questions about ignorance such as the following: Where does ignorance come from? How do we impose it on each other, and even on ourselves? And why? We usually think about ignorance as a bad thing, but when can it be preferable not to know something? What uses do people have for ignorance? What roles does ignorance play in social interaction, group relations, institutions, and law? Can ignorance sometimes be a virtue? When can ignorance be good or bad for us? How can we harness the unknown for learning, discovery, and creativity? How can we make good decisions under ignorance?

Your understanding of ignorance will be expanded via online games, discussion forums, opportunities to find out what your own “ignorance profile” is, additional readings, and Wiki materials. There also will be discussion threads specifically for those of you who want to apply understandings about ignorance to complex social and environmental problems. La presencia de las TIC en la vida de las familias es un tema en construcción, dada la permanente movilidad de la era de la información y los constantes cambios que esta plantea en un mundo que está en permanente transformación.

En esta medida, y reconociendo que desde distintas profesiones estamos en contacto con familias en diversos escenarios, resulta pertinente que tengamos claridad conceptual y también herramientas de acompañamiento necesarias para apoyar las familiar: sus necesidades y las formas como están siendo impactadas por la presencia de las TIC.

Es conveniente tener dominio del tema dada la realidad que nos desborda frente a la presencia de las TIC, las nuevas problemáticas que surgen alrededor de ellas o las que se exacerban ante su presencia como también la consideración por supuesto de sus aportes y posibilidades.

This course focuses on the social, political, economic and institutional environment of countries. This environmental context molds the country’s objectives, defines the country’s strategy, programs and policies for achieving objectives, and significantly impacts companies.

The context is affected by historical events, and by the country’s leadership. Many stakeholders shape the environment and the institutions, or “rules of the game”, that affect business. Labor, students, farmers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the military play a crucial role, making the analysis of country environments complex and fascinating.

We will study Japan in some depth, and catch brief glimpses of South Korea, Singapore, Chile, Turkey, India, South Africa and the former Soviet Union, to appreciate the forces that influence diverse country environments, and companies’ strategies.

The course will review aspects of global institutions, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), which set global rules that profoundly affect business strategy and human welfare. It will also explore opportunities and challenges at the bottom of the pyramid, the last frontier for value creation by companies and NGOs.

This course introduces the international and domestic laws, institutions, and legal and political theories that protect basic liberties of all human beings. The course provides an overview of the internal law of human rights and the principal mechanisms and strategies for holding governments accountable for violating those rights.

This course is a guide to the international courts and tribunals in The Hague. The Hague is the international judicial capital of the world. It is home to more than half a dozen international courts and tribunals that contribute to international justice. This course maps the unique roles played by these institutions and explains how they promote peace and global justice.

Develop intercultural competences for successfully leading in international environments, and working with diverse international teams.

This course is divided into three parts. First, you’ll learn how the Chinese World Order emerged in the ancient world, focusing on the concept of the "heavenly mandate" (天命) as the ultimate source of political power (1 module). You’ll also learn how the Chinese World Order expanded into the relationship between China and surrounding political entities (1 module) and several challenges when the Qing (淸) Empire replaced the Ming (明) Empire.

Second, this course will review how China tried to project its world order into the relationship with Korea and Korea came to be integrated into the Chinese World Order from the 14^th century to the 18^th century (4 modules). More specifically, it will show how China intervened in the interstate trade and Korean music. 

Finally, it will compare the two trajectories of political thoughts between Korea and Japan since 17th century. Korea fantasized itself as the genuine heir and center of the Chinese World Order, closing its door to foreigners. Meanwhile, Japan overcame the Chinese World Order and eventually converted itself as a modern state (1 module).
