Las reflexiones sobre estos temas las encontramos mejor planteadas y desarrolladas en los filósofos, porque ellos han concebido su actividad filosófica como una forma de vida válida para todos los seres humanos. Esta actividad se opone a las opiniones inciertas, engañosas y desconocedoras de la naturaleza humana que abundan en nuestro medio cultural y con las cuales se quiere cubrir la felicidad con un manto oscuro e inalcanzable para las personas. Tener una conciencia feliz, permite al ser humano realizar acciones éticas o morales igualmente felices. Este camino ético de la felicidad es el que andaremos en el desarrollo de nuestro curso y en el que cada uno de los participantes encontrará buenos argumentos para ser y vivir feliz cada día.

You need to be smart to begin a PhD - but you need to be resilient to finish one. Between one-quarter and one-third of all research students never finish their degree. The PhD is an emotional journey as much as it is an intellectual one.

What kinds of emotions does the research degree process provoke? What strategies can help students deal with the emotional highs and lows? How can academic advisors, family and friends help research students cope with these stresses - and celebrate the successes?

This course is primarily designed for masters, PhD, and research students and the academics who are tasked with helping them, but you may also be a family member or friend of a PhD student who is seeking to better understand what your loved one is going through.

By directly addressing the emotional issues, and by helping us see the connections between emotional resilience and success, this course aims to help us all create a more supportive academic environment, where students can do their best research work. 

English for Journalists offers instruction in English language development for students who are studying journalism, or working journalists who want to improve their English proficiency. Students with a basic understanding and interest in journalism are encouraged to sign up.

Statistics is a versatile discipline that has revolutionized the fields of business, engineering, medicine and pure sciences. This course is Part 2 of a 4-part series on Business Statistics, and is ideal for learners who wish to enroll in business programs. The first two parts cover topics in Descriptive Statistics, whereas the next two focus on Inferential Statistics.

Spreadsheets containing real data from diverse areas such as economics, finance and HR drive much of our discussions.  

In Part 2, we use the language of probability to examine the underlying distributions of random variables. We model real-life phenomena using known variables such as Binomial, Poisson and Normal. We learn how to simulate data that are distributed according to these variables.

We shall take up datasets that have over a million rows, which makes it difficult to analyze using a spreadsheet. This is a natural setting for R, an advanced statistical programming platform. We incorporate helpful tutorials to get learners acquainted with the platform. 

Food plays a central role in our society but few people actually understand what it does to our bodies. Learn more about nutrition and how our diet  profoundly impacts our current and future health. The course will focus on undernutrition and micronutrients. The team of Professors from Wageningen University will introduce you to vitamins and minerals and their role in human health.

This course provides a practical overview for selecting, implementing, and evaluating educational technology initiatives.

Schools are recognizing the potential for technology to transform teaching and learning. However, bringing technology into the classroom in a productive way is easier said than done. How do educators and others decide what kind and type of educational technology to use in the classroom? Which stakeholders influence that decision? What factors determine the success or failure of educational technology initiatives? How do we determine if these implementations are successful? 

This course provides a practical overview for selecting, integrating, implementing, and evaluating educational technology initiatives in formal educational settings, primarily in the US. It will include the perspectives of stakeholders that make such initiatives possible, and consider how to evaluate for efficacy. The audience for this course includes current and future teachers, entrepreneurs, developers, practitioners, and leaders in educational technology. 

Through four units over seven weeks, participants will develop an awareness and understanding of the “ecosystem” surrounding the implementation of educational technology in a formal educational setting. Participants will work towards creating a final project that synthesizes the main ideas from the course. 

The business landscape is changing so rapidly that traditional management, business and computing courses do not meet the needs for the next generation of workers in the business world. Most traditional methods are of a repetitive, rule-based nature and will be gradually replaced by Artificial Intelligence. Big data will transform how we live, work and even think. These trends and more will have a profound effect on how we see the world and create policies. In this course, the following topics are covered:

• What is knowledge management?
• How is knowledge captured, elicited, organized and created in business?
• What is big data and how can we use data analytics from a laymen perspective?
• What is Open Linked Data and how can it support machine reasoning?
• What defines the era of Science 2.0?
• How can new knowledge be mined from big data?
• What are the technical and social problems with big data?
• What is cloud computing and cloud services?
• What are examples of applications and case studies?

The course is offered by the Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Center (KMIRC) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Most of our research is company and industry based. Capabilities and competencies of the KMIRC are further strengthened by the international alliances it has formed with leading practitioners, many of which are regarded as members of the "Hall of Fame" in knowledge management, and renowned worldwide. The course is suitable for participants with a background in humanities, management, social science, physical science or engineering. No prior technical background is needed.

Humanity faces an immense challenge: providing abundant energy to everyone without wrecking the planet. If we want a high-energy future while protecting the natural world for our children, we must consider the environmental consequences of energy production and use. But money matters too: energy solutions that ignore economic costs are not realistic—particularly in a world where billions of people currently can’t afford access to basic energy services. How can we proceed?

Energy Within Environmental Constraints won’t give you the answer. Instead, we will teach you how to ask the right questions and estimate the consequences of different choices.

This course is intended for a diverse audience. Whether you are a student, an activist, a policymaker, a business owner, or a concerned citizen, this course will help you start to think carefully about our current energy system and how we can improve its environmental performance.

This course:

• Covers engineering, environmental science, and economics to enable critical, quantitative thinking about our energy system
• Focuses on a working understanding of energy technologies, rich in details of real devices and light on theory; you won’t find any electrodynamics here but will find enough about modern commercial solar panels to estimate if they would be profitable to install in a given location
• Covers environmental impacts of the energy system, focusing on air pollution, climate change, and land use
• Emphasizes costs: the cascade of capital and operating costs from energy extraction all the way through end uses
• Emphasizes quantitative comparisons and tradeoffs: how much more expensive is electricity from solar panels than from coal plants, and how much pollution does it prevent?  Is solar power as cost-effective an environmental investment as nuclear power or energy efficiency?  And how do we include considerations other than cost?

Please note that this is an abridged course, equivalent to roughly half of a full semester-long undergraduate course.  See the syllabus for topics that we include and a list of some we exclude.
