Coursera: Coursera pilots a new course format
Starting today, we will begin piloting a few courses in which all content is available only to learners who have purchased the course, either directly or by applying for and receiving financial aid. We believe that having this new format as an option on our platform will allow our partners to offer more of their courses and programs on Coursera, where millions of learners can access them. For example, we have heard from partners who are interested in using this format to offer courses that include copyrighted material for which the partner must pay a per-user licensing fee, or that rely on group work that requires a high level of commitment from all learners for the duration of the course. As with all of our pilots, we’ll be carefully monitoring how these courses perform relative to key metrics like enrollments, engagement, completion, and learner satisfaction. Today, June 20, is World Refugee Day, and Coursera is honored and proud to mark the occasion with the official launch of our Coursera for Refugees program. Created in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, Coursera for Refugees expands Coursera’s financial aid commitment from individual learners to nonprofits serving refugee populations. Specifically, the new program allows any nonprofit organization working with refugees to apply for comprehensive group financial aid for the populations they serve. Nonprofits will also have access to organizational support services such as learner engagement data, private communication forums, and dedicated Coursera technical support. Coursera: Learner Story: Bringing Education to a Community in Need
Michael Tumwesigye dreamed of building a nonprofit to help vulnerable children in his hometown in Uganda. He knew he needed more advanced education and business skills to realize his vision, but financial circumstances put most training options out of his reach. When he found Coursera, however, he was able to apply for Financial Aid and earn Course Certificates in several relevant subjects. His new skills helped him change the lives of hundreds of orphans and teachers in his community. In 2007, Michael Tumwesigye left his job as a teacher to help his aunt start a nonprofit in his hometown of Kampala, Uganda. Their organization, “In Need Home,” worked to protect and educate orphans and other vulnerable children in the local community. Michael dreamed of expanding the In Need Home’s curriculum and services, but despite having completed a BA prior to beginning his teaching career, he lacked the specific skills and experience that he needed to effectively grow a nonprofi…
