Coursera: Daun Davids: freelance Android developer and mentor
Daun Davids found a love for programming at a young age and pursued a BS in Computer Science and an MS thereafter in Computational Sciences and Robotics. She started her career as a corporate developer and independent consultant. Most recently, she was working as a professional Java developer and struggling to find a way to learn Android development which was at a level that went beyond the basics. She also didn’t live in an area with a thriving Android developers community to help her grow. During her search, her daughter unfortunately started getting sick, requiring Daun to pull her out of school. She approached her manager about working remotely or from home, but neither of those solutions fit. In the end, she decided to quit her job in order to allow herself to be available for her daughter. Looking to find a convenient way to keep her skills relevant during her time at home, Daun found Coursera and the Mobile Cloud Computing Specialization. According to her, there were no…

Our learners benefit from the scholarship and passion of a diverse pool of instructors who are experts in their fields and shape industries around the globe. But our instructors also benefit from their ability to reach and interact with thousands of Coursera learners. Here are a few recent examples. New Research Opportunities Professor Diana Kleiner’s course (Roman Architecture, Yale University) discusses several historical architectural ruins that are inaccessible or out of reach to many. But through discussions in the forums, learners around the world were able to share with the class unique images of these largely inaccessible ruins, and by doing so have brought the course to life and have expanded Professor Kleiner’s scholarship “I am thrilled by the range and diversity of images of Roman architectural ruins that were provided by learners in my MOOC, some in parts of the world I have not yet visi…

Coursera: Course Spotlight: Neuroscience for Perception and Action
Course Spotlight Series: Foundational Neuroscience for Perception and Action just started on March 30, led by Professor Leonard E. White of Duke University. This article, based on an interview with the instructor, was written by Charlie Chung of Class Central. Did you catch the social media buzz over the color of “the dress”? You might be surprised to know that although a plausible explanation has been put forward to explain our differences in perception, there is not yet a conclusive answer from neuroscience. Professor White elaborates: “It is both entertaining and mystifying. I think the most honest explanation is that no one truly knows…we simply don’t have the evidence in hand. This shows we still know so very little about color vision.” Not that people need more convincing how amazing the brain is, as advances in neuroscience are providing insights across a wide range of fields, including psychology, economics, and even philosophy. &l…

Even with his first experience immersing himself in a cirriculum through a language outside of his native Spanish and juggling a full time job at Intel, he stuck through the courses and completed the final, Capstone project. He presented his new credentials and skills to his executive team and got promoted to a more visible Android Developer role at Intel. This article, based on an interview with the instructor, was written by Charlie Chung of Class Central. Technology is incorporating location information more than ever. How many of us rely on Google Maps for driving directions? On Uber to get a lift? On Yelp to pick a nearby restaurant? Dr. Anthony Robinson calls this greater availability and use of location data via technology the “geospatial revolution”. It is a good time to learn about digital maps because of recent advances. Prof. Robinson explains, “the ability for a non-expert to create their own maps is a very recent thing in my field.” In the course, learners will create maps of their own, telling a story using data. This can be showing the locations of your favorite coffee shops or highlighting hikes that you took. Besides these personal uses, the geo…
