A native of Brazil, Daniel Adornes was starting his third semester for his Masters degree program in Computer Science. He was researching High Performance Computing (HPC) and decided to explore how he could apply himself in the real world. He found Coursera and immediately enrolled in the Data Science Specialization from JHU to combine his love of computer science, math, and statistics with the Capstone project which partners with the industry leading company, SwiftKey. Hilary Fannin graduated in 2010 with a degree in Anthropology during a rough economic climate. With no jobs available, she took up a series of odd positions in the retail and food industries to get by. Two years later, she was still frustrated, working as an office manager but longing to get back into a field she was actually passionate about. Her father introduced her to Coursera. The website opened her eyes and she decided to explore courses in areas of public health. She enrolled in Community Change and Public Health and Vaccine Trials from Johns Hopkins University. Within a few weeks of the courses, she had found her true calling and decided to embark on a new career. Aaron Pollack graduated with a BA in Political Science and found a role as a social media intern at a technology startup. But having a passion for building things, Aaron soon realized he was at the wrong side of the company with a deep interest in engineering. He was told however that he needed a more formal education or skills in design patterns, algorithms and data structures to be taken seriously as a developer.
