From time to time we like to let you know about any changes we’re making to keep our site up to date. We encourage you to check out our Terms of Service here but here’s a simple overview of the main changes: We wanted to clarify which content is available under a creative commons license (e.g. videos made by Khan Academy) and which is not (e.g. videos from some partners) so we updated the terms to make it clear how that information will be flagged We wanted to make what we mean by ‘non-commercial use’ clearer so we added more explanation and examples We wanted to clarify how child accounts can gain parent approval before becoming operational If you have any questions about these updates, you can email us at feedback@khanacademy.org. Karla Tamayo: setting new career goals with Specializations
2014-12-23 19:43:00

Karla Tamayo started teaching five years ago at the Oxford School in Reynosa, Mexico with the goal to become a principal. Her first year was successful and she got promoted to a more visible coordinator role. Looking to develop more skills in order to keep climbing up the ladder, her supervisor introduced her to Coursera. Karla quickly found value and enrolled in the Specialization: Foundations of Teaching for Learning, and also the courses Crafting the Effective Writer and Chinese for Beginners. She quickly realized that not only was Coursera a huge asset for her own professional development but a powerful tool to enhance the skill sets of the entire faculty at her school. Soon, she was bringing teachers together to take courses on Couresra depending on the needs of each grade-level and holding group discussions. Karla admits being nervous initially to take courses because of the language barrier in English—which she thought may put her behind on grasping a few concepts—…

Two billion, nine hundred ninety-nine million, nine hundred ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred ninety-nine…
2014-12-22 18:07:00

We celebrated with cake pops in the shape of a big 3, making the day all the sweeter… Today’s an exciting day for us — together we’ve just hit the 3 billionth problem answered on Khan Academy! We asked Sal what he thought of this, and he said, "Personally, I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I’m waiting for us to hit 3 141 592 653 problems solved before I get really excited.” Can you help us get to pi billion?! The rate at which everyone is learning on Khan Academy is astounding: it took less than a year to grow from 2 billion to 3 billion problems answered! Way to go! And just how big is 3 billion, exactly? We did some digging … If you had a measuring tape that was 3 billion inches long, it would wrap around the world twice. If you traveled a mile for every problem that’s been answered, you’d almost be at Pluto. If you went back in time 3 billion minutes, it’d be the 37th century B.C.E.,…

A simple search for building new skills on the web landed him on Coursera. Peter Baker: switched careers to engineering with Verified Certificates
2014-12-11 19:46:00

After almost 20 years of doing scientific programming, Peter Barker wanted to switch careers into software engineering. Unfortunately, after being on a single track for so long, some of the new technologies were foreign to him and he’d also become rusty in concepts that were taught to him decades ago. Potential employers all closed their doors and refused to take a chance on a new candidate “learning on the job.” Looking for a method to build a relevant and attractive skillset for employers, Peter found Coursera and enrolled in Pattern Oriented Software Architectures. After listing his Verified Certificate on his LinkedIn profile after the course, we was immediately called for an initial phone screening for Digital Signals Corporation. During the call, the questions were so close to the course content, that Peter actually had his course projects up on the screen to help direct his answers. He was asked to come in and was offered the position. But the role wasn’…
