Khan Academy: Share your bio and activity on your new profile
From Khan Academy software developer Stephanie H. Chang (www.stchangg.com): We recently redesigned user profiles on Khan Academy. Now you can share your bio, badge count, and activity with others. Visit your new Khan Academy profile! We are very sensitive about sharing learning information about our users, so we have chosen the most private defaults for these sections. You can use the privacy controls to manage who sees these sections: Child accounts are limited so that no one other than their parent/teacher coaches can see any learning activity information. We’ve also updated the profile pop-ups on posts and computer programs: Here’s a peek at our internal team leaderboard. As you can see, Sal has a… significant lead: Major credit goes to Tabitha Yong, Joel Burget, Ben Komalo, Marcia Lee, Ben Kamens, and many other team members who helped design, review, and try out this new feature over many iterations. Enjoy your new profile!

Coursera: Impress Any Valentine With These Lovely Coursera Classes
Album cover for Sam Cooke’s “Wonderful World” single. (Copyrighted) Sam Cooke is the perfect musician for us to study this Valentine’s Day. During the 1950’s the world dubbed Cooke the “King of Soul” because of his smooth and melodic voice on romantic hits like “You Send Me” and “Cupid”, as well as sentimental blockbusters like “Chain Gang”, “Bring it on Home to Me”, “Saturday Night”, and the politically charged “A Change is Gonna Come”. The tenderness of his voice pulls at the heart strings! This Valentine’s Day, we reminisce on Cooke’s classic and catchy tune “Wonderful World”. At Coursera, we believe those that pursue knowledge and attempt “A student” status are the coolest Valentines of them all! Impress your romantic interest; learn from the King of Soul and master these topics–all on Coursera. This gift is way better than…
Coursera: Teach Computer Science to High Schoolers Using Coursera
High school students at the French American International School in San Francisco learned the computer program language Python via free course material on Coursera. A few months ago Seth Hubbert, the Director of Academic Technology for French American International School in San Francisco, got in touch with us with an interesting idea. Seth had an idea to form a club of students that would learn Computer Science by taking An Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python from Rice University together. High Schools around the world often find it challenging to offer classes in the most recent computer science fields, despite high interest from students. Seth was creative in overcoming these limitations and preparing his students with cutting-edge skills for when they graduate. Hi Seth, can you please tell us a little more about yourself and the French American International School? What is your background in Computer Science? I’m a former chemistry and physics high sch…

Khan Academy: Here are the NCLEX-RN competition winners!
Running competitions is always a ton of fun here at Khan Academy. The best part is looking through each submission to see the creative ideas used to teach a particular subject - a bit like opening gifts over the winter holidays. As the final day of the competition approaches, the gifts start appearing faster and faster, each one different from the next! The NCLEX-RN competition we recently held was no different. We received almost 100 submissions from folks all around the world, emerging from over 60 hospitals/ institutions. Submissions came from people in the disciplines of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, and graduate studies in biological science. We were stunned with the fantastic quality of the submissions, and want to congratulate everyone who participated in our competition. The videos submitted to us explained topics in such creative and engaging ways, and the questions really reflected content a graduate nurse would see on the NCLEX-RN. Fabulous work!Toda…
Learning Solutions Magazine: Marc My Words: The Training to Competence Myth by Marc J. Rosenberg
There is an assumption that training provides enough learning and support to launch someone right to proficiency and competence the moment they leave the classroom. If the training is great and the learners learn, we are told, they ought to be able to perform competently from day one. This is hardly ever the case. Here’s why, and what to do about it.

Udacity: New Lesson, Final Project & Lesson Notes in Hadoop and MapReduce
We released Intro to Hadoop and MapReduce with Cloudera in November 2013 as one of the first courses in our Data Science track. Since then, we’ve received a lot of great feedback from students, and we’ve upgraded the course accordingly! We’ve added an additional lesson to the course which focuses on the patterns of MapReduce and gives multiple opportunities to try out the concepts taught in lesson 3. We’ve also added a final project at the end of the course for students to demonstrate and assess their skills with Hadoop and MapReduce. The final project is centered around real discussion forum data from this class. Last, we’ve also added lesson notes, a written resource to go along with the video content of the course so that you may download or print and follow along with the course to enhance your learning as well as give you a good resource for review. We’d love to hear your feedback about these additions! Do you like them? Think there a…
